  • The names of Welshmen who served (but not necessarily killed) in the First World War are listed on a memorial in the village hall of Tregaron, Wales, UK. Typical Welsh names such as Evans and Davies are seen numbered from 1 to 56 and beyond. Their vertical listing remembers the service of the local men (and possibly women) whose youth passed in the years of this worldwide wartime. Two wreaths of poppies are attached to the top in this quiet corner of the village hall in mid-Wales.

  • As stormy waves crash over its super-structure and funnel, the Liberian-registered MV Braer oil tanker spills 84,700 tonnes of crude oil into the North Sea. It sits below its water-line with crude oil leaking from its ruptured tanks after running ground in hurricane force winds, beeching itself on these rocks in Quendale Bay, west of Sunburgh Head, the Shetland Islands, Scotland. In fast-fading light, this ecological disaster occured in a beautiful region of Great Britain affecting much native wildlife although the Gulfaks oil the Braer was carrying is lighter therefore more biodegradable and able to disperse better than other North Sea crude.

Actor Harry Enfield was the face of the media campaign on tv and in print to help promote the young industry, still then an expensive accessory for the ordinary Briton. Mercury Communications, was a national telephone company in the United Kingdom, formed in 1981 as a subsidiary of Cable & Wireless to challenge the monopoly of British Telecom (BT). Mercury was the first competitor to BT, and although it proved only moderately successful at challenging their dominance, it was to set the path for new communication companies to attempt the same. In 1997, Mercury ceased to exist as a brand with its amalgamation into the operations of Cable & Wireless Communications and totally exited from the telecommunications business by 1999.
