  • A lone bather wallows lazily in the calm pool waters at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat (formerly the Bel Air Hotel), Alpes Maritimes, France. Basking on his back, the man lies with arms outstretched, the warm buoyant water making him weightless. he has found inner-peace and there is restful tranquility here, where surface-tension allows the bather to unwind completely in this idyllic place on the French Cote d'Azur riviera. Behind his head unoccupied sun loungers are facing the Mediterranean Sea, its clear horizon empty except for a lone yacht that sails along the ocean coast. The colour of both sea and pool are the same on this overcast day that allows us to experience a more muted tone to the scene, also allowing us to see the contiunation of natural waters, as if they run from one to the other.

  • A rather rotund man wearing a flat cap, a checked shirt under braces that keep his ample trousers up above his fat tummy, affectionately tickled his pet dog, a Whippet ,who stands still with two paws on his master's large leg. It is a bright day on the beach at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Bathers are running on the sand in the background and the man and his dog are content to watch the world go by from their promenade bench. Their is a great deal of trust and love these two have for each other - the gentleman having brought his dog on holiday to the seaside with him, rather than leave him with friends or in kennels. The dog is healthy, lithe and obviously has great speed in those muscular legs, vastly different to the man, whose frame is heavy and slow.

The man has a greying beard and sunglasses against the glare and is an eager helper to those struggling with heavy travel possessions. On the ground are stencilled the words 'Passenger Loading Only' referring to where departing travellers might seek help with baggage. There are armies of workers across the world keeping airlines and airports running 24/7. • Mo Suo minority people in a small community village home. Leaders of such communities are women, who live separate lives (mostly) from the men of the village. They still lead very simple lives, tending their crops and animals. Local tradition is that if a man wished to be with any woman in the village, he must simply knock on her door at night. Should she become pregnant with his child, the man’s brothers would have to raise the child. Here a Mo Suo woman who leads a more modern life, working in a nearby hotel, texts a friend on her cell phone. Her Honda baseball cap is in contrast to the much more traditional woman on her bed at the edge of this dark living area.

  • A schoolboy of Afro-Caribbean descent stands looking confused on a platform at Victoria mainline station in central London. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

  • With dozens of deck chairs behind him, a sleeping middle-aged man lies bare-chested with a flat cap on his head and with his socks on as all Englishmen tend to do during a summer heat wave. He has chosen a spot in a near-empty Hyde Park in central London - an oasis of calm amid a bustling city – where a seat in a striped deck chair can be rented for a few Pounds for the day and one can snooze topless without being bothered and one’s stresses of daily life can be momentarily forgotten. With one hand resting on his leg, the other reaches down to hold on to his shoulder bag which is in the shade on the short grass.

  • Two young men dressed in office suits casually stuff their lunches during a hot lunchtime break in the Broadgate Estate in the City of London. Both with legs across knees, the lads in their 20s sit on a bench beneath a tree alongside the statue of a traditional gardener, slightly bent and equipped with hoe and wearing a wastecoat, hobnailed boots and flat cap, an iconic salt-of-the-earth workman. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-exhausted man whose life has been spent working the honest land. The English social divide is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus the youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • Displayed on a table at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, peaked caps of the former East German (DDR in German) border police are on sale in orderly rows for the sake of tourists to this German city. The border troops of the German Democratic Republic (Grenztruppen), were a military force of the GDR and the primary force guarding the Berlin Wall and the border between East and West Germany. The Border Troops numbered at their peak approximately 47,000 troops and other than the Soviet Union, no other Warsaw Pact country had such a large border guard force. In all, 1,065 persons were killed along the GDR's frontiers and coastline, often by the border guards. The East Germany state existed from 7 October 1949 until 3 October 1990 and was a potent symbol of a divided Europe during the Cold War.

  • Elderly visitor at Kinver Edge, home to the last troglodyte dwellings occupied in England, with a set of complete cave-houses excavated into the local sandstone at Kinver, United Kingdom. One of the rocks, ‘Holy Austin’, was a hermitage until the Reformation. The Holy Austin rock houses were inhabited until the 1960s. They are owned by the National Trust and are open for tour. One house has been restored to a Victorian appearance, and the Martindale Caves show what life was like in the 1930s. Kinver Edge is a high heath and woodland escarpment just west of Kinver, and is on the border between Worcestershire and Staffordshire.

  • A 'gun' grouse shooting in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire, UK. Driven grouse shooting is a field sport of the UK, popular because it provides a challenge due to the rapid flight of the grouse. The grouse shooting season extends from 12 August, often called the "Glorious Twelfth", to 10 December each year. The name 'driven grouse shooting' refers to the way in which the grouse are driven towards the hunters (termed 'guns') by beaters. A shooting party usually includes 8-10 guns who stand in a line in the butts - hides for shooting spaced some 20-30 m apart, screened by a turf or stone wall and usually sunken into the ground to minimise their profile - to shoot the grouse in flight.
