  • It is dawn in Calcutta, West Bengal, India and on the West bank of the Hooghly River the sun is rising from across the Howrah Bridge. The working day is beginning for this pedestrian seen carrying a large, heavy tank full of liquids, possibly on his way to market or a shop in Central Calcutta. • Worker carries a portrait of a male model, a fixture on its way to another premises in Soho, central London. The panel shows a well-dressed model leaning against a bar, the epitome of health, wealth, good looks and success. He seems to be staring at us while being transported along the street towards a nearby business where the picture is needed to decorate a retail wall. We see rather prominently, the arms of the man carrying the portrait and those of a passer-by while the model apparently looks on helplessly - as if being kidnapped.

  • A strip of tourist postcards is on sale as a workman passes-by carrying ladder near the Eiffel Tower, at the Trocadero, Paris. It is an exceptionally dark and gloomy day in the French capital. In the foreground we see the uncut of tourist mementoes being offered for sale by North African vendors, hawking whatever they can to the many coaches that stop here on the Paris tour route. Images of the Mona Lisa, the Louvre art gallery, Notre Dame cathedral and the city skyline can be bought. But more strangely is the workman passing-by carrying a ladder, on his way to cleaning nearby windows. The ladder resembles the rung-effect of the postcards’ strip while in the background is the Eiffel Tower, rising above rooftops and the plaza floor.

Originally created by ElefantAsia in 2007, the 3-day elephant festival takes place in February in the province of Sayaboury with over 80,000 local and international people coming together to experience the grand procession of decorated elephants. It is now organised by the provincial government of Sayaboury. The Elephant Festival is designed to draw the public's attention to the condition of the endangered elephant, whilst acknowledging and celebrating the ancestral tradition of elephant domestication and the way of life chosen by the mahout. Laos was once known as the land of a million elephants but now there are fewer than 900 living in the country. Around 470 of them are in captivity, traditionally employed by a lucrative logging industry. Elephants are trained and worked by a mahout (handler) whose relationship to the animal is often described as a marriage and can last a lifetime. But captive elephants are often overworked and exhausted and as a consequence no longer breed. With only two elephants born for every ten that die, the Asian elephant, the sacred national emblem of Laos, is under serious threat of extinction.

They rush to work while one figure stands and talks into his mobile phone, at Broadgate in the City of London, UK. Several figures who are also reduced to black shapes and without detail that may identify them or their clothes, are hurrying in different directions, carrying a bag or briefcase but the feeling of rushing business is seen and their scale is ambiguous becase we don't know how close or far away they are from each other. This is due to telephoto lens forshortening. Some therefore look giants and some appear tiny. • A businessman wearing a light summer suit and carrying a briefcase walks away in the opposite direction to Canary Wharf tower which is seen over his shoulder from across a tree-lined Brockwell Park in South London, approximately 7.5 miles away. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape.
