  • A radiographer reviews an abnormal chest x-ray and demonstrates the showing that suggests active tuberculosis disease. An abnormal digital chest x-ray is shown on the screen in the NHS’s Mobile X-ray Unit (MXU). The chest x-ray was taken as a public health screening for Tuberculosis (TB). The van is parked outside a hostel in central London and the visit is part of a public health intervention for Active Case Finding for TB in hard to reach groups. The rates of TB in London are higher than any other Western European capital and is a major public health problem. TB is an infectious disease, but treatable and curable if diagnosed in time. • A man carrying a briefcase walks on the south side of London Bridge in Southwark, central London. As he makes his way uphill and alongside a slanted wall, his long shadow from winter afternoon shunshine is cast in front of him as a distorted form of his body. We still see the shape of his hat and the case on his right hand.

  • Showing a Neighbourhood Watch sticker to discourage crime, a map and various by-laws, the Resident's Association Information Board is attached to a brick wall on Middlemarsh Street in the experimental community village of Poundbury, Dorset, England. The wooden case needs treating and the glass needs wiping but there is a feeling of security and of a close and friendly community. Poundbury is the visionary model village that Charles, Prince of Wales sought to develop in 1993 as a successful and pioneering town near Dorchester, built on land owned by his own Duchy of Cornwall, challenging otherwise poor post-war trends in town planning and to some extent following the New Urbanism concept from the US except that the design influences are European.

  • Pie cases in the kitchen at F Cooke's Pie and Mash shop in Broadway Market, Hackney, London..Eel, pie and mash shops are a traditional but dying business. Changing tastes and the scarcity of the eel has meant that the number of shops selling this traditional working class food has declined to just a handful mostly in east London. The shops were originally owned by one or two families with the earliest recorded, Manze's on Tower Bridge Road being the oldest surviving dating from 1908. Generally eels are sold cold and jellied and the meat pie and mash potato covered in a green sauce called liquor.

  • A No Sharp objects warning is plain to see as a British Airways check-in employee attaches a luggage tag to the suitcase of a Business Class passenger about to take a long-haul flight from London Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. The bag is about to disappear down the conveyor belt to join up to 70,000 other items during this average day at T5. With a bar code to identify both the bag and its owner's destination as well as the three letter IATA code, the bag enters 11 miles of underground conveyor belts beneath the 400m (a quarter of a mile) length of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. T5 alone has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year and was completed in 2008 at a cost of £4.3bn. • A life belt hangs on a cross-shaped post, all painted a vivid red as the sun sinks down below the horizon and beyond the historic Bamburgh Castle, in Northumberland, northern England. Lit with a strong off-camera flash we see the slightly blurred device, invented for saving lives at sea, with a ghostly corona around its form, against a fading blue sky. The rope dangles near the ground, around which the grasses of the dunes blow in a faint breeze. Only the foreground is lit by the flash and the distant castle building and shoreline. We see such equipment and imagine safety and rescue and also jeopardy and hazards at sea. Supplied for those taking risks and making stupid decisions makes these items essential on coastal areas.

  • A businessman wearing a light summer suit and carrying a briefcase walks away in the opposite direction to Canary Wharf tower which is seen over his shoulder from across a tree-lined Brockwell Park in South London, approximately 7.5 miles away. The flattened-perspective is because of an extremely long telephoto lens making it seem closer than it is in reality. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape.

  • A Christian crucifix stands encased in a wooden box that has been attached to a panelled wall in Quebec, Canada. The image is white except for the Jesus icon itself and coloured lights which glow on this dark afternoon in the depths of Winter. The religious shrine consists of the human effigy standing a plinth next to faded dried flowers. On the left side are six wheel hubs also fixed to a wire fence that borders this person's property. Their decorative design suggests the Canadian owner likes driving sports or utility vehicles but who is also a worshipper of the Christian faith and believer in idols. Canada's 2001 Census showed, 72% of the Canadian population listed Roman Catholicism or Protestantism as their religion. The Roman Catholic Church in Canada is by far the country's largest single denomination.

Despite being nationalised in 1947 "as one of the ‘commanding heights’ of the economy", British Rail was not profitable for many years. Comically they also wear wide sombrero hats bought in Cancun during their vacation around the Gulf of Mexico, the destination of this popular cruise line whose base is Miami. Stitched with garish colours the souvenirs provide shelter from the overhead tropical sun though the woman of this couple chooses to hang hers over a shoulder and keeps her original hat on her head.
