Cuthbert c. 634 - 687 is a saint of the early Northumbrian church in the Celtic tradition. He was a monk, bishop and hermit, associated with the monasteries of Melrose and Lindisfarne in what might loosely be termed the Kingdom of Northumbria in the North East of England and the South East of Scotland. After his death he became one of the most important medieval saints of Northern England, with a cult centred on his tomb at Durham Cathedral. Cuthbert is regarded as the patron saint of Northern England. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, also known simply as Holy Island, is an island off the northeast coast of England. Holy Island has a recorded history from the 6th century AD; it was an important centre of Celtic and Anglo-saxon Christianity. After the Viking invasions and the Norman conquest of England, a priory was reestablished.

Visible here are the Olympic Stadium on the left and the Aquatic Centre on the right. Residents in this area (of which there seem to be very few, especially in the tower blocks) are concerned for many reasons. Not least of which the possible threat that the entire estate site may be sold off to UCL (University College London). People in this area generally feel very negative towards the Olympics, which they feel is not going to benefit them at all.

It was extensively damaged during the civil war an was used by the Bosnian Serb army as a military position from which to snipe and shell the city. • In a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England, we see many black bin-bags are left against industrial brick walls awaiting collection during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. The cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses are in a poor area, south of the city centre and home to deprived families. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs now exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • Faded grandeur of Casa Miralinda, a mansion house now abandoned and crumbling, on 17th July 2016, in the spa resort of Luso, Portugal. Across the country, and even at important tourist landmarks, buildings sit vacant and often collapsing. Sometimes it is because a previous generation have passed away to leave properties in the hands of arguing families. Beautiful buildings are therefore left to collapse in town centre. In the 11th century, Luso was a sleepy village linked to a monastery in the hills near Coimbra but it became a lively spa resort in the 1700s as its hot water springs became a focus for tourism.

  • A young man has stopped by a rubbish bin to inspect his shoulder on which a nearby pigeon has recently messed on his best work suit. It is an unfortunate incident in the middle of a working day for this man in the heart of the City of London, London's financial centre - otherwise called The Square Mile. Armed with a spare tissue paper, the male cranes his neck over the shoulder to see how much of the crap remains while the flock of birds pace around on nearby grass to scavenge for crumbs left by other lunchtime office workers, otherwise enjoying warm weather in Bishopsgate Churchyard.

After the Libyan revolution of 1969, the flag was changed to the Arab Liberation Flag of horizontal red, white, and black bands. When Libya left the Federation in 1977, the new plain green flag was adopted. But during the 2011 uprising, the old flag was once again adopted.

With the tall marble replica statue of Neptune in the background as well as the mounted figure of Cosimo Medici on his horse to the left, the tourists are listening to the amplified commentary of their leader who tells them about the history of this city and its context within the medieval world of art and trade. The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, Florence has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages.
