  • A Polish man leans over to put the finishing touches to two small snowmen that now occupy a park bench on Goose Green in East Dulwich, Southwark, South London, England. This otherwise green space has seen snow falls that have gripped this part of the capital with unsalted road surfaces and commuting nightmares. But this young man is having fun with his diminutive snowy creations who have been dressed up in his and a friend's glasses, their scarves and gloves and with locally-found twigs. The park is relatively quiet with only a hint of the chaos elsewhere but the time spent on pointless pursuits is one way of enjoying adverse weather, rather than the more serious business of getting to work, proving also that snow brings out the childish nature in us all.

  • Children play in a desolate street in the town of Nova Huta. Amid the filthy walls of their tenement building home and of the grim, car less street beyond, two older children play in their doorway while younger friends peer from around a corner. It is horribly depressing and unhealthy place to grow up and these children are pale and yet seem happy, with smiles on their faces. The famous steel works can be seen at the end of the street. After the war, Stalin decided to build an ideological communist fantasy just outside Krakow: a model town and immense steelworks of the future. The steelworks was named after Lenin and the town would be called Nova Huta. At its peak, 27,000 people worked at the Lenin Steelworks. But Solidarity grew strong forcing strikes over pay and recognition over their union. Today, it is an economic and ecological disaster area.

  • A close-up detail of teenage words, written in marker pen on a young person's arm in the departures concourse of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. Holding the handles of her baggage trolley that has an open bag in which we see some possessions, the girl displays the words 'I (heart) love you' and the name of Kentin Bisou. It may be a declaration of true love or just a teenage prank before an adventure starts from this aviation hub. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Two pilots of the Red Arrows, Britain's RAF aerobatic team enjoy a moment of release during a stressful display season. In a brief moment of light-hearted banter, the officers joke around in the crew room at their UK base at RAF Scampton. Otherwise, their leaning curve is steep, even for these accomplished fast-jet aviators who had already accumulated 1,500 hours in fighters. By Summer they need every aspect of their 25-minute displays honed to perfection.

  • At the foot of a tree located opposite the charred Pentagon building days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, children have made a makeshift memorial by placing a garland around the model of a military B52 bomber, a NASA space Shuttle, portrait of a smiling president George W Bush and their own interpretation of the attacks on the Twin Towers - with airliners flying towards those symbols of capitalism. Icons of American technology and patriotic success lie on the ground here beneath the tree near Arlington military Cemetery. In a show of unity, many of those gathered on the grass to view the damage done by terrorists worked for the government or defence organisations, their Hawkish rhetoric appearing to suggest heavy-handed retaliation on those held responsible.

  • Foreign travellers and ex-pats play drinking games at a bar called CJ's in the Chinese economic region of Macau. An unseen person stands over the customer and pours a mixture of apparently lime and an alcoholic drink into the other man’s open mouth. It spills and dribbles down his face but otherwise ends up in his throat for some kind of pleasurable – and expensive – youth experience. On his t-shirt are the words Rage Against the Machine, an anarchic message of rebellion.

Here in the forest they return home with the sun in their eyes having had the time of their lives. The beech trees' branches are full with leaves on this mid-summer afternoon in this tranquil scene of childhood innocence, of long summer days and summer holidays. • Two young ‘Scouse' girls sit on a telephone junction box and against a brick wall on which there is graffiti and childish scribbles. They are near a back alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. The older, taller girl is of Asian-descent and the younger is White British who hides her face with her top. Both are facing other activity in this inner-city street where there are 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre and home to deprived families. Few of these back-to-backs exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • The face of the Conservative candidate in Britain's general election Charlotte Vere has been defaced by the childish scrawls over her eyes and mouth. In this residential street of the Brighton Pavillion constituency, we see the one sign that urges voters to support the Tories, spoiled and another in the background untouched by the political jokers. Vere is a Tory business woman fighting this parliamentary seat in East Sussex under the leadership of party leader David Cameron.
