• Chillies for sale in Southall in West London, also known as 'Little India' by some, is an area almost completely populated by people from South Asia. Figures show that the area is approximately 50 percent Indian in origin although walking the streets it would appear far higher as the local people go about their shopping in the many shops specialising in goods specific to this culture. The mix of religions is mainly Sikh, Hindu and Muslim.

Southall is primarily a South Asian residential district. 1950 was when the first group of South Asians arrived in Southall, reputedly recruited to work in a local factory owned by a former British Indian Army officer. This South Asian population grew due to the closeness of expanding employment opportunities. The most significant cultural group to settle in Southall are Indian Punjabis.

 • "Puddle in Oxleas Wood." A six month-old infant looks out from a baby back carrier frame whilst out on a muddy winter jaunt in Oxleas Wood on Shooters Hill, South London. The girl peers out with a fascination for the outdoors from a warm coat wearing a tiny hat and loose-fitting gloves to view the world while perched high-up on her mother's back who carries her child on the chilly walk. The bare trees and forested landscape can be imagined from the waterlogged puddle that is out of focus to the right. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

 • In the morning rush-hour, a busy road junction is seen during a snow-shower as traffic builds up at traffic lights and pedestrians to and fro in Dulwich Village, Southwark, South London. Snowflakes can be picked out in car headlights as a lollypop man in fluorescent yellow holds his stop sign to waiting cars, eager to get on with their journeys across the capital during bad weather at the start of 2010, A Mini still has a thick layer of snow on its roof and bonnet (hood) and a number 37 bus to Putney Heath has passengers on its top deck, steamed up in the chilly temperature outside and the warm moisture inside. On the far right is a grey GATSO traffic camera that flashes those who jump red lights. For those struggling to reach work or school, this is another challenging commuting morning.

 • It is 07.45 on a dark, wintry morning and from behind, we follow a lone commuter who walks along a snow-covered path in Ruskin Park, an otherwise green space in the south London borough of Herne Hill, Lambeth. Street lights are still illuminating the road in the background and the blue light of early morning has fast becoming another day of snow showers and chilly temperatures. No grit or salt has been sprinkled on this slippery path and the person walks carefully carrying an umbrella from falling sleet which is soon to turn to rain as the temperature rises. Tall ash trees whose trunks form an avenue of cover and the commuter proceeds towards their neighbours to the station beyond. A single 4x4 car makes its way through this still quiet street with lights blazing.

The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

The menacing figure looks ghostly, a menacing and eerie scene that seems to threaten the safety of approaching others. Freezing fog lies in the street in this south London suburb in the depths of mid-winter. We can't see his face or features and his ominous and sinister shape guarantees his anonymity.

 • A father chases a runaway tyre (tire) along the wet sand before it crashes into the man's young child, otherwise unaware of the impending impact. Chasing the object is the priority on this winter day at Whitley Bay, a North-Eastern English seaside town. The beach is dark and it has been raining but father and child are enjoying the freedom and common bond during this outdoor game. Waves of the icy North Sea crash onto the seafront and the child is preoccupied with the force of nature and the exhilaration of being outside in the cold.

 • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

 • A local lady shopper passes-by a Closed Road sign on a hill in south London during wintry snows. Rather than drive to her local supermarket, the woman has instead parked her car in a safer place and walked to where she can stock up on provisions. She has made her way up the incline from the shop and looks over to the sign telling others that this road is temporily shut to vehicles. During a mid-winter morning, when commuters are struggling to reach their work places, the capital also finds it hard for transport and infrastructure to keep running as normal. Local councils facing government cuts also find it hard to maintain services during such challenging conditions.

Still to towel himself down, he looks chilled to the bone but stands talking to friends out of view. • As blue dawn light becomes another wintry day in south London, the glow of a car's brake lights shines through a covering of fresh snow. The driver has only swept the vehicle's back window with a rear wiper but with her foot on the brake pedal, she is about to set off on a drive to work this morning on roads that have controversially, not been gritted or salted by council highway workers. The surface is therefore still snowy in this residential area of Herne Hill, SE24, London and is a treacherous surface on which to maintain wheel and tyre (tire) traction and many accidents will result, including the heavy lorry (truck) which is about to climb this hill and which will soon prevent him from going much further.

 • A car owner attempts to shovel his way out of snow on a hill in South London. Bending down to remove the fallen snow from the road, he will again try to get a grip and friction of the slippery surface in order to make it up the gradient in Herne Hill. A van behind is already becoming impatient and is about to get past the stranded car and a passer-by looks on from the pavement, bemused. As the capital's infrastructure ground to a halt, with few trains and no buses for commuters to catch, walking and driving remained the only options.

 • A traditional red telephone box is seen on Denmark Hill, South London covered in fresh snow from overnight snowfall. Pedestrians walk past next to Ruskin Park, SE24. These K-series kiosks were designed in 1936 by the renowned designer Giles Gilbert Scott. With the increasing use of mobile phones the static phone boxes are still used in remote areas of the UK where mobile service is still patchy and in major towns and cities, their presence is becoming rarer. In rural regions however, the British red phone box is still a delight to see and use.

 • A local dad sledges down a hill in South London. Trying to pick up speed he holds his legs out in front to avoid too much breaking as deep snow has blocked this quiet road in Herne Hill, SE24. Behind the father is his son who also comes downhill, past parked cars that are all covered in snow - abandoned by owners who would otherwise have driven to work. settling on this part of London's inner-city - an unusual event - and the heaviest precipitation for 18 years.

 • A boy plays snowballs at night during heavy snow showers in central London - a rare event for an inner-city. Snowflakes are falling in large amounts settling on this street in Herne Hill, South London. The lad is in his element by going outdoors at night as the showers are falling everywhere about him. He dashes across the picture, running through thousands of snowflakes armed with a snowball destined for his elder sister's head. Relishing the hide and seek game they're playing and the prospect of landing the snow as a direct hit makes him look mischievous and excited.

 • A P4 bus service destination Lewisham Station climbs Herne Hill early after fresh overnight snowfall in the south London area. During a mid-winter morning, when commuters are struggling to reach their work places, the capital also finds it hard for transport and infrastructure to keep running as normal. With its headlights on half-beam, the snow is still making this hill treacherous to climb as this heavy vehicle again starts from the bus stop, having lost its traction on the slippery road surface. A passenger alights, carefully stepping down from the bus onto the snowy kerb as other people walk uphill, preferring to make their own way. The snow rests on surrounding Victorian house roofs and in the distance; it is a bleak day in the misty urban light where high-rise flats (apartments) can be seen.
