  • Construction workers wearing hard hats hook up a pile of concrete beams on to a waiting crane hook. One man bends down to help loop a chain beneath one of the girders and attached to the dangling hook while another secures the chain and another man is in radio contact with the crane driver out of sight. Importantly, behind their low-loader truck is a Smirnoff advertising billboard with a famous ad campaign for the Vodka distillery. It depicts three carved Polynesian statues of Easter Island but seen through a botttle of the alcoholic beverage, is a representation of a face wearing a head band and MP3 headphones. Seen juxtaposed with the construction men and their building technology this scene describes a visual pun between an ancient lost civilization and the modern age of technology. Smirnoff is a vodka distillery founded in Moscow, by Piotr Arsenieyevich Smirnov. The <br />
brand is now distributed in 130 countries and includes flavored vodka and malt beverages. The Sminoff advertising campaign is said to be based on the Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte whose paradoxical images stretched our ideas of what was reality and the fantastic.

Mounted above the Athenian city within fortified 60m high walls, its history is a World Heritage Site, important because of its “universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex." • Hermit, Tom Leppard 72, has been living in seclusion at this unidentified spot on the Isle of Skye, Scotland for 22 years. He crouches as he emerges from his self-made shelter, largely cut-off from the outside world. Converting the north-facing dry-stone walls into a home against harsh Scottish winters, he uses a knowledge of survival skills to help him stay fit and largely healthy although his memory is fading and muscular ailments trouble him. Few know his exact whereabouts but concerned locals visit when weather prevents him from crossing a 2km-wide Loch in an old canoe. A tarpaulin roof is weighted down by heavy rocks as winds can be fierce this far north. His days are spent washing, cleaning and carrying out maintenance jobs that keeps his home clean and fresh. Tom is a former solder and sailor and chose this spot when he sought solitude.

  • Fallen Ionic and Doric columns lay in the undergrowth at Olympia, Peloponnese, Greece. The 29th modern Olympic circus came home to Greece in 2004 and in the birthplace of athletics and the Olympic ideal, amid the woodland of ancient Olympia where for 1,100 continuous years, the ancients held their pagan festival of sport and debauchery here. These fluted columns that date to about 400BC that now lie in the shade were originally piled on top of each other to construct - among other buildings too - the Temple of Zeus. There, the athletes made offerings to Nike, the Goddess of Victory before going out to compete in the many sports. The modern games share many characteristics with its ancient counterpart. Corruption, politics and cheating interfered then as it does now.

  • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth.

  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, we see visitors watching a re-enactment of a Civil War skirmish at the Gettysburg National Military Park. As a group of Confederate troopers parade on the battlefield, we see printed on a woman tourist's back, the quoted words spoken by President George W Bush on 9/11/01. His rallying call to the nation, answering the demand for vengeance against the 'evil-doers' is included in his rhetoric, reproduced on clothing and on messages displayed around the US. The American Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg was fought in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and was the one battle with the largest number of casualties: Between 46,000 and 51,000 killed in the three-days in July 1863.
