  • Two assessors inspect damage to buildings after the IRA Bishopsgate bomb in the City of London. They stand on a junction looking up at buildings whose windows were blown out by the force of this notorious blast that shook London’s financial district. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) exploded a truck bomb on Bishopsgate. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged with one and a half million square feet (140,000 m) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Repair costs reached approx £350 million. It was said that Roman remains could be viewed at the bottom of the pit the bomb created. One person was killed when the one ton fertiliser bomb detonated directly outside the medieval St Ethelburga's church.

Lying on its side, the yellow bike looks broken and abandoned though its owner may not be aware of its  horizontal state. The two narrow spaces specifically for bikes are in a sidestreet in central London where a diversion sign leans against the wall, coincidentally the matching colour of the motorbike.

  • Vandalism to an HSBC bank cash dispenser the morning after the TUC-organised anti-government cuts to Britain's economy. The word Thieves has been sprayed with aerosol on a boarded-up window relating to the belief by protesters that HSBC is a tax-evader. The riot by anarchists who broke away from a largely peaceful protest agasinst government economic cuts. Organisers estimated between 250,000 and 500,000 people took part but police said a total of 201 arrests had been made during the day largely for a variety of public order offences, they said. In addition, 66 people were reported to have been injured, including at least 31 police officers, 11 of whom required hospital treatment.

  • As stormy waves crash over its super-structure and funnel, the Liberian-registered MV Braer oil tanker spills 84,700 tonnes of crude oil into the North Sea. It sits below its water-line with crude oil leaking from its ruptured tanks after running ground in hurricane force winds, beeching itself on these rocks in Quendale Bay, west of Sunburgh Head, the Shetland Islands, Scotland. In fast-fading light, this ecological disaster occured in a beautiful region of Great Britain affecting much native wildlife although the Gulfaks oil the Braer was carrying is lighter therefore more biodegradable and able to disperse better than other North Sea crude.

Office windows have been blown out and shattered glass lies everywhere making these workplaces unusable for many months afterwards. We see the men under the tall buildings looking tiny in comparison to the chaotic aftermath of this enormous explosion the day before. The bombing marked the end of a 17-month IRA ceasefire during which Irish, British and American leaders worked for a political solution to the troubles in Northern Ireland. 2 people were killed in the half-tonne lorry bomb blast which caused an estimated £85 million damage.

Traffic has been diverted around this otherwise busy road junction and the car continues to burn as the fire brigade arrives to assess the dangers. A firefighter walks back towards an unseen fire engine before returning to deal with the serious fire to the engine and then extinguishes the flames.   • London 8th September 2012: A fire breaks out in the empty buildings of a former primary school called Bessemer Grange, off Denmark Hill in the south London borough of Southwark. Two firefighters carry out a heavy gas cannister away from the heat and flame. The former pre-school structure was eventually gutted after several fire tenders arrived to douse the flames which had already taken hold of the prefabricated structure. Bessemer Grange junior school and the current nursery occupies a location across the road and is on the former site of Victorian iron magnate, Henry Bessemer's mansion.

Attempting an emergency landing, 47 people died and 74 people, including seven members of the flight crew, sustained serious injuries. The aircrafts tail snapped upright at ninety degrees and here were most of the passenger fatalities. The devastation was hampered by woodland and the fire fighters are attempting to rescue survivors or extract those killed in this air disaster that proved one of Britains worst.
