• The clean-up begins the morning after the Poll Tax riot, on 1st April 1990, in Charing Cross Road, London, England. Angry crowds, demonstrating against Margaret Thatchers local authority tax, stormed the Whitehall area and then Londons West End, setting fire to a construction site and cars, looting stores up Charing Cross Road and St Martins Lane. • Sheriff Woody Pride, aka Woody, the cowboy character from the Pixar/Disney CGI fantasy film Toy Story, lies forgotten outside a south London charity shop. Facing the viewer, we see the happy features of this famous movie character - whose on-screen narrative is that of a forgotten toy, now unwanted by his growing-up boy owner. As art becomes reality, Woody has been left on the pavement after being dumped by his previous family. A common problem is that charity donors leave unwanted things outside in the street, for others to come and rifle through, leaving a mess that's difficult for volunteers to clean up.
“Before Turquoise Mountain came here it was very bad. Everywhere smelt, it was full of rubbish and the sewage – people just threw it out in front of their houses- it was two or three metres high, you could reach the top floor of the houses by standing on the garbage. During the war, there was nobody to clean up the rubbish, then buildings would collapse and then rubbish would go on rubbish.
Before working with Turquoise Mountain I was just polishing shoes, now I get $5 dollars a day.”

 • Looking down into a steep-sided valley, Distant streets and working-class terraced homes are beyond smoking chimneys from a Furnacite coking plant at Abercwmboi. Once known as the worst polluter in Britain it was owned by the National Coal Board (NCB) and sold to the Welsh Development Asoociation (WDA) for £1 Pound though arguments are still raging about how to clear it up and cleanup estimates range from £15-£20 million. The pollution had cruel effects on the local population. It made smokeless coal and locals joked that the plant took the smoke out and dumped it on the Cynon Valley but there was concern about toxic waste dumped in the village after the plant’s closure and some suffered birth defects. Ironically, the plant was closed because of environmental considerations.

 • Three teenage boys bait their lines in the calm of the River Wandle, one of London's lost rivers that still meanders through inner-city London on its course from Carshalton Pond to the Thames. The three lads are reflected in the ripples of this once-polluted water which was once flushed with the toxins of industry such as tanning factories and breweries. After expensive clean-ups by local authorities, kids like these are once again able to catch trout in the way boys like them would do hundreds of years before the industrial revolutiion fouled many a water course. It is a perfect later-summer afternoon and the sun is shining on waterside reeds and grasses making this a scene of idyllic boyhood and undusturbed lazy dreams.
