  • Visitors try out a lake pedalo at Chateau de Clos Lucé, home to Leonardo da Vinci for the last 3 years of his life and now a celebration of his life and achievements, Amboise, France. A father and teenage son attempt to steer the small boat along a narrow canal-like water but failing miserably - unable to master the rudder and paddles in unison. Leonardo drew plans for a paddle-propelled boat - something that we nowadays use on our seasides and coastal waters. At the age of 64, da Vinci crossed the Alps on a mule with 3 favourite paintings in saddlebags - one of which was a painting of a Florentine lady - today known as the Mona Lisa. He lived here until his death in 1519.

  • Two Hawk jets from the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, almost touch in mid-air at an altitude of approximately 4,100 feet in the Mediterranean skies above Cyprus. The texture of mottled cirrus cloud provides a soft background for the aircraft which approach each other at a combined air speed of approximately 800 miles per hour (1,200 kph). The Opposition Loop is flown by the two pilot partners known as the Synchro Pair who fly independently of the other seven in the second-half of their 25-minute show. The two jets have vegetable dye and derv (diesel fuel) smoke mixture coloured red, blue or white. Here it traces the paths of both airplanes which curve from the edges of the frame to the centre (center). To the crowds far below, both look as if they are on collision course but will safely pass within feet of each other.

  • A young deer lies dead beside a busy highway on a road near Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington State. Very recently run-over but seemingly unharmed, this animal has head injuries and died immediately from a collision with a passing vehicle, such as this heavy articulated lorry which blurrs past this location. This is forested area and the deer's natural habitat but too often wildlife in its natural surroundings violently meets the modern human environment and the animal comes of worst. As a result of the death, the roadkill was taken by members of a US Air Force survival course at their nearby facility and so it formed an unscheduled extra lesson in preparing venison for the pot that night (see Corbis image entitled 'US Air Force survival instructors with recent roadkill').

  • A family risk their safety near a larger cruiser while passing-by in a tiny motorised boat on the River Thames during the Henley Royal Regatta boat races, England. The father and children float past the larger vessel that could badly damage their boat in a collision. The river is busy on Regatta weekend and vessels of all shapes and sizes occupy an otherwise narrow stretch of water in rural Oxfordshire. Parties and good-humour on-board the cruisers still means that river laws and good behaviour must be followed to avoid accidents. In 1829 a boat race challenge was held between teams representing the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The venue chosen was a straight stretch of the Thames at the small town of Henley-on-Thames. Now held July and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season for the hoi polloi.

Damaged by a collision of sime sort, the post sits at an odd angle against the wall of an office building, seemingly pulled to the left by yellow and black hazard tape, attached to the corner with Cannon Street. It is an odd scene of irregularity in otherwise regimented urban streets of the capital's financial centre aka The Square Mile, founded by the Romans in the 1st century.

  • The four great chimneys of the Grade II listed Battersea Power Station rise to become one of South London’s most notorious landmarks. In the foreground on Battersea Park Road is construction hoardings that yew hedges that act as an incongruous background with a bent phone box, recently damaged in a collision, and a bus stop at which a passenger awaits the next bus. Once a coal-fired power station located on the south bank of the River Thames, near Battersea in London, Battersea A Power Station was built first in the 1930s, with Battersea B Power Station to its east in the 1950s. The two stations were built to an identical design, providing the well known, four chimney layout. The station was decommissioned from generating electricity in 1983. The was used in The Beatles' 1965 movie Help! and on the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals.

  • After heavy rain and the subsequent flooding, two lone canoeists paddle down the centre of the A27 near Chichester, West Sussex. The Dual carriageway has been completely submerged to approximately 1.5 metres and only the road sign with its directional arrow is visible above the surface which is rippling in a faint breeze. The men in red and yellow kayaks look inexperienced in boating activities and their clothing is not suitable for water sports. Even so, they are speeding down the highway that is otherwise empty of all other vehicles and they have the water and space to themselves without the fear of collision.

  • A cyclist is startled by a nearby bus horn that emits a warning to pedestrians at the location of a roadside memorial to cycle courier Henry Warwick aged 61, killed in an accident on the junction of Bishopsgate and Wormwood Street. Warwick worked for Rico Logistics and was said to be an experienced urban cyclist, working as a courier in London for more about 20 years. Nevertheless, he has joined a growing list of tragic deaths due to collisions between bikes, trucks and in this case, a Terravision coach. Over one million Londoners own bicycles and between 1986 and April 2011, 439 cyclists have been killed in traffic accidents in Greater London.

  • One shovel-full of road grit has been left in a small pile at the kerb of a side road in East Dulwich, South London. Left by workers from the borough of Southwark, this modest supply is symbolic of the controversial problem of local government running low on street grits and salts that help prevent thousands of traffic collisions and pedestrian falls every winter. In January of 2010 (following the equally snow fall of February 2009) councils were caught unprepared for adverse weather which virtually brought towns and cities and rural communities to a standstill. We look down at the fallen snow, trodden by countless pairs of boots which compress the snow and make it an often treacherous surface on which to tread.

  • A person carries a bicycle wheel, minus its tyre, past a cycle path in central London. Seen from a low angle, the anonymous man holds the bike wheel in one hand before crossing the road near Holborn. Walking along the cycle path that is otherwise reserved for cyclists, he has walked over the cycle path arrow and bike stencil on the pavement. London is undergoing a massive building programme for dedicated cycle lanes where cyclists will enjoy more separation from traffic that has unfortunately lead to many collisions and deaths in the capital.
