  • Seen from behind and from a low angle, we see the towering, imposing figure of a City of London Police officer while on duty in Trafalgar Square during England v USA World Cup match. At the half-time pause in the game, the officer stands to watch over this location noted for political protest and sporting celebrations. On this occasion though, there is no large TV screen to avoid social disorder and the City of London Police who usually patrol the capital's old financial district are helping the larger Met Police force during this sporting summer. Seemingly below him, is the 5.5 m (18 ft) statue of Admiral Nelson on its 46 m (151 ft) Foggintor granite column, built between 1840 and 1843 to commemorate the heroic Napoleonic war sailor Horatio Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

  • In an archaeologists' shed at the site of further excavations in Pompeii, Italy, the bones of an ancient Roman citizen is spread out on a metal sheet after being uncovered from Volcanic ash and pumice. Pompeii was buried beneath metres of toxic material from Mount Versuvius in May AD79 and this person was suffocated then crushed from falling debris. Preserved in a shell of volcanic material it is to be examined for desease yielding clues as to its lifestyle and eating habits. The skeletal remains are clearly identifiable with spinal column vertibrae, one jaw still containing teeth and various pieces of bone have been recovered. Many bodies littered a rooftop here proving that many survivors of the first eruption perished after the second many hours later.

A single Doric column is seen lower-right and slightly discoloured paintwork from wet English weather is on the edge of the balcony of an otherwise exclusive and classically-designed street in Belgravia. Eaton Square is one of London's three garden squares built by Thomas Cubitt and the Grosvenor family when they developed the main part of Belgravia from 1826 until 1855. Belgravia attracts actors, politicians, ambassadors, big-budget bankers, traders and Prime Ministers like Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin at number 93.

  • Looking upwards towards the back of a number 8 red London bus which passes the pillars of the famous Bank of England building at Cornhill in the City Of London, the financial district, otherwise known as the Square Mile. We see the Bank rising as an imposing classical structure. Its columns are converging because of wide-angle lens-distortion, giving us the image of strength, stability and influence in UK economics. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage routes. Its distinctive rounded rear bodywork is easily recognisable as that classic British icon.

  • A businessman wearing a light summer suit and carrying a briefcase walks away in the opposite direction to Canary Wharf tower which is seen over his shoulder from across a tree-lined Brockwell Park in South London, approximately 7.5 miles away. The flattened-perspective is because of an extremely long telephoto lens making it seem closer than it is in reality. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape.

  • Looking upwards towards a memorial that commemorates the dead from the First World War of 1914-18 between the converging pillars of the Cornhill Exchange building and beyond, to the famous Bank of England in the City Of London, the financial district, otherwise known as the Square Mile. It is early evening as the ambient light fades while artificial illumination becomes the dominant light-source. With such a wide-angle perspective the bank and its architecture looks powerful and influential in the UK's economy. The dark pillars contrasting with the colourful (colorful) light emitted from this established Bank makes for a scene of stability and strength against the pity and tragedy of a past conflict that claimed millions of lives.

  • Architecture and design of Paul-Loeb-Haus in Berlin Mitte, one of the government buildings of the German Bundestag. Named after the last democratic President of the Reichstag, Paul Löbe House was occupied in July 2001. It houses 550 offices for MPs, 19 conference rooms, around 450 offices for parliamentary committees, the Bundestag information service for visitors, and a restaurant that is open to the public. A pedestrian subway connects Paul Löbe House with the Reichstag building. The eastern end of the ribbon of federal buildings extends across the River Spree in the form of a parliamentary office block divided into two parts.

  • Abbey Church columns at Fontfroide Abbey near Narbonne, France. Fontfroide Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in France, situated 15 kilometers south-west of Narbonne. It was founded in 1093 by Aimery I, Viscount of Narbonne, but remained poor and obscure, and needed to be refounded by Ermengarde, Viscountess of Narbonne. The abbey fought together with Pope Innocent III against the heretical doctrine of the Cathars who lived in the region. It was dissolved in 1791 in the course of the French Revolution. The premises, which are of very great architectural interest, passed into private hands in 1908, when the artists Gustave and Madeleine Fayet dAndoque bought it to protect the fabric of the buildings from an American collector of sculpture. They restored it over a number of years and used it as a centre for artistic projects. It still remains in private hands. Today it is open to paying guests.
