  • At the base of the Monument which commemorates the Great Fire of London, a courier driver from the United States Postal Service (UPS), stands with his head in his hands as if in reaction to the conflagration behind. Above him is a giant mural, whose huge figures depict the panic and evacuation during the disaster that struck London between 2nd of September and Wednesday, 5th September 1666. The modern man in company uniform is wearing the same brown colours as that of King Charles II and his courtier who are also reacting to the news of the city's burning timber buildings. 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St. Paul's Cathedral, and most of the buildings of the City authorities were lost in the high fanned winds. It is estimated that it destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the City's 80,000 inhabitants. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • In the twilight, the artificial illumination of Macau's Hotel Lisboa 24-hour a day casino is the only colour (color) of this cityscape. The dominating silhouette of a giant open-mouthed Chinese lion looms from outside the Bank of China building in central Macau. Besides historical Chinese and Portuguese world-heritage relics, Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Though many forms of gambling are legal here, the most popular game in the casinos is baccarat, which generates over two thirds of the gaming industry's gross receipts. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese and the Macau Special Administrative Region, more commonly known as Macau - or Macao - is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma and this temple dedicated to the seafarers' goddess dates from the early 16th century.

  • "Crooked Lady." A twelve month-old girl who has recently learned to walk proudly strides past an elderly lady with balancing arms outstretched while at the Dulwich Show in South London. There is a marked difference between the youthful, upright posture of the young girl to the hunched and bent stance of the old woman who stands supporting herself on a brolley. It is a picture that compares youth with old age, the delight that a person of later years shows to a child whose life reaches far ahead. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • Two women walk past the Charles Tyrwhitt menswear outfitters in Eldon Street in the City of London, the capital's heart of its financial district and a good location for suits and businesswear. A pair of Englishmen raise their bowler hats in a gesture from a previous era, when hats said much of your social standing, a summary of your position in the class system. In the 21st century though, the hat is largely an item of clothing to wear only for extreme cold or heat. A leggy girl strides past the shop frontage, seemingly curious of this bygone gentlemanly tradition.

  • Gathered on the Docklands Light Railway track, a group of police investigators and health and safety experts stand beneath the devastation and wreckage caused by the IRA’s docklands bomb on 10th February 1996. Office windows have been blown out and shattered glass lies everywhere making these workplaces unusable for many months afterwards. We see the men under the tall buildings looking tiny in comparison to the chaotic aftermath of this enormous explosion the day before. The bombing marked the end of a 17-month IRA ceasefire during which Irish, British and American leaders worked for a political solution to the troubles in Northern Ireland. 2 people were killed in the half-tonne lorry bomb blast which caused an estimated £85 million damage.

The current Chancellery building (opened in the spring of 2001) was designed by Charlotte Frank and Axel Schultes and was built by a joint venture of Royal BAM Group's subsidiary Wayss & Freytag and the Spanish Acciona from concrete and glass in an essentially postmodern style, though some elements of modernist style are evident. Occupying 12,000 square meters (129,166 square feet), it is also one of the largest government headquarters buildings in the world. By comparison, the new Chancellery building is eight times the size of the White House.
