  • Animals kept in appalling conditions at this snake farm on Khlong Bangkok Yai canal. Basing the ethos of the farm on snake conservation did not seem appropriate given the conditions that the snakes and other much larger anomals were kept. In unclean water, cages and tanks, with little vegatation and looking rarely cleaned, the animals had a palour of illness, exhaustion and in cases, madness. Snakes during the snake show were repeatedly provoked into attack by the snake handlers slapping, pinching and throwing the snakes.

  • A brave taxi cab driver drives gingerly along Denmark Hill in South London, The capital's infrastructure has largely come to a halt due to the large amounts of snowfall that has hit the capital - the most for 18 years. In addition to the lack of buses, trains were severely affected and roads like this have not been gritted by the local borough council, leaving motorists struggling to control their vehicles is the slippery conditions. The taxi's orange light is still illuminated indicating he is free for hire and a foot of snow is piled on his roof as the headlights pick out the driving blizzard conditions. Footprints are already in the drift near the pavement that is now hidden from the road.

  • Morning fog envelopes pedestrians crossing the river Thames on the Millennium Bridge with the dome of St Paul's Cathedral in the background. A mother and child with another person make their way across the bridge, muted colours from the green screen making a subdued landscape. It is mid-morning but the misty conditions have still to improve enough for visibility to allow a clear view a cross the river where city offices and skyscrapers are normally seen. London's Millennium Footbridge is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians linking Bankside with the City of London. The Wren-designed St Paul's is built of Portland stone in a late Renaissance style that represents England's sober Baroque.

During a prolonged cold spell of bad weather, snow fell continuously on the capital days before, allowing families the chance to enjoy the bleak conditions in Ruskin Park in the borough of Lambeth. During a prolonged cold spell of bad weather, snow fell continuously on the capital on Sunday, allowing families the chance to enjoy the bleak conditions, here in Ruskin Park in the borough of Lambeth. The football goalpost, part of a soccer pitch used by local teams is otherwise unused as the weather forces local games to be cancelled before the grass beneath is again revealed. In the distance are Edwardian period houses beneath 100 year-old ash trees.

  • A local lady shopper passes-by a Closed Road sign on a hill in south London during wintry snows. Rather than drive to her local supermarket, the woman has instead parked her car in a safer place and walked to where she can stock up on provisions. She has made her way up the incline from the shop and looks over to the sign telling others that this road is temporily shut to vehicles. During a mid-winter morning, when commuters are struggling to reach their work places, the capital also finds it hard for transport and infrastructure to keep running as normal. Local councils facing government cuts also find it hard to maintain services during such challenging conditions.

  • Standing on the back of his utility vehicle, a man empties the contents of his dustbin onto a growing pile of rubbish in a recreation park in the otherwise affluent Allerton area of Liverpool, Merseyside, England, during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. Adding to this mountain of refuse, the 'Scouse' man (someone from Liverpool) is seen surrounded by black binliners and items from domestic homes which have been allocated this public space to become a temporary landfill. The industrial action aginst the local authority - over pay and working conditions - was a health problem for Liverpool's population during the summer of 1991 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks such as this were filled with every kind of refuse and garbage.

  • An aerial view of a mid-winter landscape of local railway tracks in Dulwich, south London. Stretching into the distance up the line, we see the empty scene without people and more especially - no trains. Routes in this area of Southwark have again been disrupted, with services cancelled leaving commuters on cold platforms. The snow is neither deep nor drifting but London again seems to have been caught with infrastructure unable to cope with poor weather conditions.

  • In a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England, we see many black bin-bags are left against industrial brick walls awaiting collection during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. The cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses are in a poor area, south of the city centre and home to deprived families. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs now exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

With the child's tilted pushchair skating over compacted snow driven over many car tyres, the lady wears trainers that are themselves, ill-suited to walking though snow. Nearby vehicles are still covered in snow, having been left during this urban cold snap, something that Londoners are learning to cope with during times of economic council cuts when snow-clearing is not a spending priority.

  • Kneeling in undergrowth, a camouflaged British infantry soldier is seen looking down the telescopic sight of the new British-made Long Range L115A3 sniper rifle on Salisbury Plain, Warminster, England. Sniping means concealment, observation and assassination, a strategy the British are using more against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Swiss Lapua .338 inch rounds (8.59mm) travel at sub-sonic speeds of 936 metres/sec, finding its target accurately up to 1,100 metres. The rifle weighs 6.8kg with telescopic image-intensified scopes to 25x life size vision, made by Schmidt & Bender. Front-mounted ‘suppressor’ minimises the signature normally compromising snipers’ position. At £23,000 each, a £4 million contract has been awarded to Accuracy International, to provide the Army, Royal Marines and RAF. The British say this is the best sniper rifle in the world.
