  • Moving steadily 100 feet (8 metres) along a live-line electricity cable, a National Grid maintenance worker protected in a conductive cage, proceeds to the next 'separator' that holds the high-voltage cables from touching each other. From the ground we see the sagging cables stretching to a distant electricity pylon and two yellow cages, one large in the foreground where we see the human figure standing like an astonaut, and the other cage out of focus, a greater distance away but all dwarfed by the huge structure of girders and relays. Wearing clothing bonded to the conductor, the lineman can work comfortably inside the electrical field at close range with gloved hands. National Grid Electricity Transmission plc owns and operates the National Grid high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales.National Grid plc is a United Kingdom based utilities company which also operates in other countries, principally in the United States. The company adopted its current name in July 2005 when shareholders agreed the change from National Grid Transco plc.

  • In a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England, we see many black bin-bags are left against industrial brick walls awaiting collection during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. The cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses are in a poor area, south of the city centre and home to deprived families. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs now exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • It is 1985 and a farmer walks along a line of long, combustible straw and with a pitchfork and smouldering straw, sets fire to the organic material in an Essex field, southern England. It is late summer and the harvested corn has left behind short stubble which the farmer sets ablaze. This now restricted practice of destroying cereal straw and stubble by flame was stopped by the introduction of The Crop Residues (Burning) Regulations of 1993 which now restricts farmers on burning crop materials, including residues of oilseed rape, field beans and peas, except in very limited circumstances, e.g. for disease control where a plant health order has been served. The burning of straw and stubble also deprives the soil of valuable organic material and releases greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

Adding to this mountain of refuse, the 'Scouse' man (someone from Liverpool) is seen surrounded by black binliners and items from domestic homes which have been allocated this public space to become a temporary landfill. The industrial action aginst the local authority - over pay and working conditions - was a health problem for Liverpool's population during the summer of 1991 when streets filled with rubbish. In the foreground we see a stack of discs called Insulators which stop the electricity carried in the conductor (the wires strung between each pylon) from jumping to the pylon and then down to earth. Diagonally, the cables travel across the picture but they are part of a line of 542 pylons that have already crossed 110 miles of English countryside, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables from Dungeness coal-fired power station to West Ham sub station in London's East End - to power the West End's high supply demands.

  • We see the head and shoulders of a man in military uniform who stands motionless beside the American flag. he is at a graduation ceremony for United States Air Force pilots who have just passed a week-long survival courseheld at the Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington. Its highy-trained personel conducts a survival, escape and evasion course which combat pilots and air crew need to pass before rejoining their units for real-time warfare. Conducted, in hangars and the surrounding forests, it forms part of an extensive physical and psychological assessment of young aviators on active service. In the future any one of them may be shot down behind enemy lines and need to use the lessons passed-on here to help facilitate their rescue by US forces. One pilot who passed this course in 1991, himself a Spokane-born boy, was F-16 pilot Scott O'Grady. He put his skills learned here to the test while evading Serb forces before being airlifted to safety and a hero's Presidential welcome.
