  • A schoolboy of Afro-Caribbean descent stands looking confused on a platform at Victoria mainline station in central London. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.

  • A confusing pair of street signs showing two of the 71 Peachtree street and road names known in Atlanta. It is often joked that half of the streets in Atlanta are named Peachtree, and the other half have five names to make up for it. While "Peachtree" alone always refers to this street, there are 71 streets in Atlanta with a variant of "Peachtree" in their name. The first Peachtree was a Creek Indian village on the Chattahoochee River called Standing Peachtree. An army outpost built nearby took the name Fort Peachtree. From this has come a forest of Peachtrees. In Margaret Mitchell's epic Civil War romance Gone With the Wind, Scarlett O'Hara lives on various points of Peachtree Street along the novel.

  • With a confusing perspective and scale, a spectator photographs artist Yinka Shonibare's artwork called Nelson's Ship in a Bottle on the Fourth Plinth in London's in Trafalgar Square. The artwork features a 1:29 scale replica of Lord Nelson's original HMS Victory commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, Shonibare said his version with its textile sails with African and batik prints reflects the multicultural and diverse capital. The 2.35m high ship inside a specially-made glass bottle, will be in place for 18 months. 37 large sails are made of patterns which are commonly associated with African dress and culture. The patterns also look back at the path of colonialism as the patterns were inspired by Indonesian batik design, which were mass produced by the Dutch and sold to the colonies in West Africa. The Fourth Plinth is in the north-west of the Square.

  • Real remembrance wreaths on the ground at the foot of a black and white vintage era photograph that shows the Cenotaph, currently hiding the real monument being renovated in London's Whitehall. In a landscape of false perspective and confusing juxtapositions between reality and the reproduction of the picture, we see the famous war memorial in central London. The London Cenotaph was originally a temporary structure erected for a peace parade following the end of World War I, but following an outpouring of national sentiment it was replaced by a permanent structure and designated the United Kingdom's official war memorial. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the permanent structure was built from Portland stone between 1919 and 1920. 'Cenotaph' derives from the Greek kenotaphion (empty tomb).
