Their origins are from Mongolian nomadic tribes whom settled on the Ziro plateau, close to the Chinese border, they practice fixed agriculture as well as forestry, planting trees on the rim of the plateau as well as bamboo forests from which they derive fire wood, building their homes as well as using the bamboo for all manner of applications in their daily lives, cooking utensils and household containers amongst other uses. They carefully cultivate bamboo forests allowing them to grow, but not flower and die, as this would spell disaster for their very own existence. They also tend to their rice fields and live stock for what is mostly a subsistence economy. • At dawn, a week after the September 11th attacks in New York and in Washington DC, we see the haunted figures of war veterans looking up at the names of dead comrades of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Constitution Gardens, Washington DC where 58,195 names of casualties are recorded on its polished wall. In the foreground are some of those mens' identities whose average age was 19 in the sixties and seventies. A hazy sun rises over the point of the Washington Memorial at a time when the nation was mourning those killed in the New York and Washington attacks, when the military was about to mobilise once again with many American lives lost. The Vietnam war however, remains a low-point in the nation's history and the old men who survived return to trace their buddies which helps them deal with the traumatic loss of their friends and their own youth.

  • An early morning misty forest landscape in Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. Phongsaly Province is one of the remotest of the Lao PDR provinces and is dominated by rugged, mountainous terrain and an abundance of thick forests. In the 1950s, forests covered 70 percent of the land area of Laos; but by 1992, according to government estimates, forest coverage had already decreased to just 47 percent. Despite the dwindling forest, timber and other forestry products constitute a valuable supply of potential export goods. The forest has also been an important source of wild foods, herbal medicines and timber for house construction for local people.
