  • An elderly homeless man walks slowly past a Barclays Bank cash dispenser at which business people are either queueing or typing in their PIN numbers from cash accounts, or simply passing-by. One middle-aged gent stands eyeing the poor man suspiciously while other men of wealth, prospects and prosperity are tall and stand erect in smart suits and polished shoes, the homeless man is hunched and dishevelled, carrying a supermarket bag - perhaps containing all of his worldly goods. It is a tragic scene of extremes between the haves and the have-nots; the rich and poor; between people with hope and those in despair. This is the City of London, near Fenchurch Street Station where the UK's insurance companies are based and it is impossible to know if any of these men in smart clothes are the same age as the poor man.

  • Toy doll thrown away and lying face down in a housing estate in Vauxhall in London, England, United Kingdom. The naked doll has an atmosphere of despair and desperation about it, and looks much like an old scene from a past era.

  • Retail mannequins advertising a 70% sale with a woman street beggar in the San Marco shopping district of Venice, Italy. The four little people normally modelling clothing are today draped with discs telling buyers of the shop's discounts. On the pavement is an unfortunate old woman who sits on the street with a cup held for Euros and cents.

  • 'Jesus said' Biblical quotations on a city church and bleak background tower blocks in the London borough of Southwark. Locals in these bleak south London streets may be uplifted by the words from the Christian scriptures, comforting the troubled with messages of humanity from the Bible, perhaps guiding Londoners incarcerated in the depressing 1960s tower block high-rises, homes to the poor and the dispossessed.

  • Diners ignore a man lying unconscious outside a McDonalds restaurant on a London street. As people get on with eating their burgers and fries such as illustrated in the window poster above their heads, the unfortunate man is horizontal on the pavement (sidewalk). He may be homeless or simply suffering from the effects of afternoon alcohol. The scene is almost Dickensian where the drunk were treated with disdain as they lay pitifully on London's streets, the outcasts of a socially-divided Britain.

  • A wide landscape of dereliction and poverty during the early 1990s in the city of Liverpool, England. The Liver building is seen in the far distance as a symbol of the city centre beyond an empty street up which a solitary man walks his dog. Empty buildings await destruction after the terraced housing has long been razed to the ground in the 1960s - the impoverished population having moved out for a better life elsewhere.

  • A solitary person walks over wasteland in Liverpool, England, left after housing was demolished decades ago - its impoverished population having moved out for a better life elsewhere. the sign tells us the name of this road but paint has been daubed over it in an attempt perhaps, to erase its identity now that the community has gone too. Billboards for consumer goods are on show for non-existent shoppers.

  • Women tourists walk past a female street beggar in the San Marco shopping district of Venice, Italy. Making their way along this shopping street the young women have comparitively prosperous lifestyles as opposed to the woman of unkown ethnicity, desperate enough to beg in a European city perhaps after a hard journey from another continent/

  • In a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England, we see many black bin-bags are left against industrial brick walls awaiting collection during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991. The cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses are in a poor area, south of the city centre and home to deprived families. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool during the summer of '91 when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs now exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • A low, wide landscape of dereliction and poverty during the early 1990s in the city of Liverpool, England. • A low, wide landscape of dereliction and poverty on a Toxteth estate during the early 1990s in the city of Liverpool, England. With a crumbling brick wall now fallen on to long grass in the foreground and in the distance, the remains of former homes with gaping holes in roofs, now derelict and awaiting demolition now that all residents have left, their community dispersed to other nearby estates, an impoverished population having moved out for a better life elsewhere.

  • Passers-by ignore a destitute bag lady in a Hong Kong's Tsim Sha Tsui street on the Kowloon side. The poor woman sits amid the bustle and crowds of a capitalist population obsessed with wealth and prosperity, she is alone in a material world. Bent over with shame and poverty, the lady is shrouded in a sleeping bag with all her worldly possessions at her feet. Unconcerned, the rest of the Chinese shoppers and commuters simply pass-by on their way to achieve yet more success in this former British-ruled colony that was ceded back to China in 1997.

  • Sitting drunk on a mid-town sidewalk (pavement), a construction worker wipes tears from his eyes. The man has driven from his mid-west home to offer help at the hazardous Ground Zero where for the past 4 days and nights he has been uncovering debris and human remains after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Exhausted and emotional, he was sent away for his own and the safety of others and alcohol was his first purchase. New Yorkers praised their heroes for assisting their city (and America) in their hour of need but here, passers-by stepped over him complaining of his drunken state. The now lonely man is distressed, tormented and psychologically fragile but gets no help. With his few possessions, his hard hat and flag, mask and cans of Budweiser we see a man at his lowest ebb.

  • Surrounded by black bin-bags during the Merseyside dustmans' strike of 1991, two young "Scouse' girls lean against a brick wall in a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. There is an older, taller white teenage girl with blonde hair dressed in a blue shell-suit and a shorter and younger friend of Asian-descent. Looking suspicious and amused at something across the cobbled alley of these 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre, home to deprived families.
