• Golliwog characters on sale in a junk shop in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom. The golliwog, golliwogg or golly is a black fictional character created by Florence Kate Upton that appears in childrens books in the late 19th century usually depicted as a type of rag doll. It was reproduced, both by commercial and hobby toy-makers as a childrens toy called the golliwog, and had great popularity in the UK into the 1970s. The image of the doll has become the subject of controversy. Whilst some people see the dolls as innocuous toys, its depiction of black people is seen by many as racist.

 • The words 'Last Day' are painted in white emulsion on a window Camden North London, England. A Jesus figure, dolls and various bric a brac are seen in the window behind the large lettering. Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

 • Hassina Syed, business woman, with her two daughters Sana (age 3)and Hirah(2), photographed at her home and business the Gandamack Lodge Hotel. She also rents armoured cars, runs a farming business, a travel agency and a bedding shop. She is married to Peter Jouvenal an ex soldier, journalist and westerner who has lived in Afghanistan for twenty years.

She experienced first hand, how terrifying the Taliban could be. She says:

‘I opened up the Chadri (mesh front of the burkha) to see a tea-cup and suddenly from the back, a Taliban soldier came with a big stick, shouting at me. If you get beaten by a Taliban, you could die.
“I made myself look as old and bad as possible because if they ( the Taliban) saw you looking even a bit beautiful, they could come to your house and take you as one of their wives”

“For me having money is dangerous, kidnapping is a big problem. A friend’s uncle was kidnapped; they wanted $150 000, He was so mad he said, ‘I am not paying that he is an old man!’ Eventually they dropped the price and said OK, just cover our fuel and the bribe for the police (30 000 dollars)."

 • In a Brussels Flea Market, two curly-haired twin sisters wander about the cobbled square to play with a an empty push-chair at the Marché du Jeu de Balle, in the Marolles district of Belgium's capital city. In harsh sunlight the girls role-play at mothering, a gender conditioning that all children discover and these females are finding it natural to act as parents at such a young age. An antique doll sits looking in our direction, dressed in frilly clothes and all around is Chinese laquered furniture and other kids' toys like a hobby horse and a trike. At Place du Jeu de Balle Flea Market, you can find an extraordinary mix of household items, vintage clothes, crockery and furniture. This market is open daily from 6am to 2pm and is in the heart of the “Marolles” district, a working-class neighbourhood that was built in the 17th century.

 • Sheriff Woody Pride, aka Woody, the cowboy character from the Pixar/Disney CGI fantasy film Toy Story, lies forgotten outside a south London charity shop. Facing the viewer, we see the happy features of this famous movie character - whose on-screen narrative is that of a forgotten toy, now unwanted by his growing-up boy owner. As art becomes reality, Woody has been left on the pavement after being dumped by his previous family. A common problem is that charity donors leave unwanted things outside in the street, for others to come and rifle through, leaving a mess that's difficult for volunteers to clean up.

 • On a bright summer afternoon, a young spoiled girl shows-off by riding her favourite motorized Barbie trike along The Parade, the main promenade in the north Welsh seaside town of Llandudno, Wales. Wearing a bright pink helmet and travelling on the matching pink toy bike, she trundles along with the low-tide coast over her left shoulder. Barbie is a best-selling fashion doll launched in 1959 and produced by Mattel, Inc. The brand's merchandising reaches far and wide to countries and cultures around the world and this little girl seems to be the happiest on the beach, enjoying a generous present perhaps from a parent. She is the exact age that Mattel are targeting when they market these toys to accompany their dolls and accessories though the industry has come under fire for its controversial stereotyping of gender and subtle sexuality.
