  • Two children lay down on the ground at the foot of a solid dry stone wall, up in the hills of the area of northern England known as the Dales, near Settle, Yorkshire. The two brother and sister have their faces against the rocks that serve as boundaries and enclosures for farmers and land owners. These walls were built by tradesmen called Wallers, a dying tradition and skill. Dry stone walls are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. The wall is held up by special construction methods and by its weight. The stones must be carefully selected by shape to ensure that they have a large contact surface area with their neighbours and so do not slip. They are a legacy of the movement towards enclosure of common farming and grazing land as English society moved away from medieval feudalism. Model released.

  • Two children walk along a path between two dry stone walls in the countryside around the Yorkshire town of Settle. Striding between the boundaries of agricultural grazing land, whose trees and undergrowth has been cleared, the kids have come from a distant farmhouse which has recently lost its stock of sheep due to Foot and Mouth disease. • A rural red Victorian post box mounted on a dry stone wall in the Vale of Edale, Peak District National Park, Derbyshire. The distinctive letter VR denote the box’s age, meaning Victoria Regina as opposed to GR for King George or currently ER, for Queen Elizabeth. We also see daily postal collection times on the label. Edale is a valley in North Derbyshire, situated about 15 miles west of Sheffield, a loose collection of scattered farmsteads or 'booths' as they are known which grew up around the original shelters or 'boothies' used by shepherds when tending their sheep on the hillsides. There are 5 main ones in Edale valley, Nether Booth, Ollerbooth, Upper Booth, Barber booth and Grindsbrook Booth of which the village called Edale is part.

  • As early morning mist makes its way across moors and mountain grasses, we see a dead ewe that lies decomposing at a collapsed dry stone wall on Nether Moor, Derbyshire. The sheep has been left behind the rest of the farmer's flock and as it decomposes, its eyes have already been pecked out and its white front incisor teeth gaping, as if grinning in death. This is a loss of revenue of vital income at a time of economic hardship for those in this tough industry. In the background we see the moors rising to it summit in the area called Edale, a valley in North Derbyshire, 15 miles west of Sheffield, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Edale valley is a loose collection of scattered farmsteads or 'booths' as they are known which grew up around the original shelters or 'boothies' used by shepherds when tending their sheep on the hillsides.

  • A stone wall detail at the Old Smithy, Pennyghael, Isle of Mull, Scotland. In a close-up view, we see the tight fitting stones interlocked to provide strength as well as security for this domestic property. Their are few weeds telling us the wall is well-maintained and it is likely that only local materials have been used in this and other buildings. The origins of building in dry stone, i.e. without the use of mortar, are lost in the mists of antiquity. The use of stone in various builds such as funeral chambers and living accommodation date from the Stone and Iron Ages. Regional styles and patterns of construction do vary throughout the country but the principles of construction established thousands of years ago are still practiced to this day. Regrettably, there is little written historical record of those who practiced the craft in the early days.

  • Walkers explore paths along Roman Emperor Hadrian's Wall, once the northern frontier of Rome's empire from Barbarian tribes. Hadrian's Wall (Latin: Vallum Aelium) was a stone and timber fortification built by the Roman Empire across the width of what is now northern England. Begun in AD 122, during the rule of emperor Hadrian, it was built as a military fortification though gates through the wall served as customs posts to allow trade and levy taxation. The 4.5m high Wall was 80 Roman miles (73.5 miles, 117km) long and so important was it to secure its length that up to 10% of the Roman army total force were stationed here. Tough walkers generally take 7 days to trek its coast-to-coast length.

  • A scarecrow guards crops and plants by a Gloucestershire country garden dry stone wall. The human figure has been made of straw and fabric, a cloth hat and the form of a blackbird on its head. It stands against the stone wall at the boundary of land in this Cotswold garden, near Cirencester. A scarecrow or hay-man is a decoy or mannequin in the shape of a human. It is usually dressed in old clothes and placed in open fields to discourage birds such as crows or sparrows from disturbing and feeding on recently cast seed and growing crops. As its name suggests, it scares away crows (and other species) from a field.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, also known simply as Holy Island, is an island off the northeast coast of England. Holy Island has a recorded history from the 6th century AD; it was an important centre of Celtic and Anglo-saxon Christianity. After the Viking invasions and the Norman conquest of England, a priory was reestablished.

  • Hermit, Tom Leppard 72, has been living in seclusion at this unidentified spot on the Isle of Skye, Scotland for 22 years. He crouches as he emerges from his self-made shelter, largely cut-off from the outside world. Converting the north-facing dry-stone walls into a home against harsh Scottish winters, he uses a knowledge of survival skills to help him stay fit and largely healthy although his memory is fading and muscular ailments trouble him. Few know his exact whereabouts but concerned locals visit when weather prevents him from crossing a 2km-wide Loch in an old canoe. A tarpaulin roof is weighted down by heavy rocks as winds can be fierce this far north. His days are spent washing, cleaning and carrying out maintenance jobs that keeps his home clean and fresh. Tom is a former solder and sailor and chose this spot when he sought solitude.

  • Traditional dry stone wall in Powys, Wales, UK. Dry stone is a building method by which structures are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. Dry stone structures are stable because of their unique construction method, which is characterized by the presence of a load-bearing façade of carefully selected interlocking stones. Dry stone technology is best known in the context of wall construction, but dry stone artwork, buildings, bridges, and other structures also exist.

  • Locals walk over the exposed stone walls of the once-thriving village of Ashopton that now lies at the bottom of Ladybower reservoir, Derbyshire, England. Remains of the village were revealed during the drought of 1989 the levels of water dropped from the country's reservoirs as rainfall failed in the heatwave while demand peaked in the cities such as Sheffield. The villages of Derwent & Ashopton were submerged when the valley was flooded, between 1943 & 1945, amid much controversy. Derwent church tower was left standing at first, but demolished in 1947 for safety reasons. The remains of the buildings are still visible when the water is very low, as it was in 1989.

  • Traditional dry stone wall built from Cotswold stone at Lower Slaughter in The Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, UK. The village is built on both banks of the River Eye, which also flows through Upper Slaughter. At the west end of the village there is an old water mill with an undershot waterwheel and a chimney for additional steam power. Popular with both the English themselves and international visitors from all over the world, the area is well known for gentle hillsides ‘wolds’, outstanding countryside, sleepy ancient limestone villages, historic market towns and for being so ‘typically English’ where time has stood still for over 300 years. Throughout the Cotswolds stone features in buildings and stone walls act as a common thread in seamlessly blending the historic towns & villages with their surrounding landscape. One of the most 'quintessentially English' and unspoiled regions of England.

  • A Nepali family consisting of parents and young children outside their home in the central region of the Himalayan mountain kingdom. Children and adults are near a dry stone wall in a foothill dwelling near the town of Gorkha where the British army traditionally find young men for the Gurkha regiment (as thay have done since 1857). The family are wearing clean clothes with bright colours and appear healthy despite this country - and especially for those living at altitude - being one of the world's poorest. The prospects for these children may mean they will in future try to seek work in the cities like Kathmandu rather than face a lifetime's struggle in local agriculture. Their supplies and contact with the outside world comes up from tracks of boulders and stone along which either men or yaks carry up food for basic survival and luxury goods.
