  • A man hangs from the hat of Prince Henry, Duke of Viseu, at the Monument of the Discoveries at Belem, Lisbon. The man has found a way to scale part of the 177 foot (54 metre) high celebration to Henry, otherwise known as Henry the Navigator, or Seafarer. The trespasser is dwarfed by the giant, oversized effigies and the man hangs by his fingers and rests his foot on Henry's ship's sail which points out to sea. It is a clear day with blue skies and the slightly yellow stone is side-lit to show each feature of the carvings in fine detail. It is a classic scene of Portguese history depicted during the 1960s fascist Portuguese President Salazar's regime. Henry remains one of ocean-conquering Portugal's most famous of cartographers, whose explorers discovered new routes around Africa and the Atlantic. Although he was called Prince Henry the Navigator by the English, Prince Henry never actually sailed on any of the voyages of discovery he sponsored. Instead, Prince Henry established a school for the study of the arts of navigation, mapmaking, and shipbuilding. This would allow sailors to better guide their ships and to come up with new ship designs. Immediately behind Henry is King Manuel I then poet Luis de Camōes. The eight figures are carved by sculptor Leopoldo Almeida and along with the monument, were commissioned for the 1960 world exhibition to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Henry's death in 1460.

  • Moving steadily 100 feet (8 metres) along a live-line electricity cable, a National Grid maintenance worker protected in a conductive cage, proceeds to the next 'separator' that holds the high-voltage cables from touching each other. From the ground we see the sagging cables stretching to a distant electricity pylon and two yellow cages, one large in the foreground where we see the human figure standing like an astonaut, and the other cage out of focus, a greater distance away but all dwarfed by the huge structure of girders and relays. Wearing clothing bonded to the conductor, the lineman can work comfortably inside the electrical field at close range with gloved hands. National Grid Electricity Transmission plc owns and operates the National Grid high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales.National Grid plc is a United Kingdom based utilities company which also operates in other countries, principally in the United States. The company adopted its current name in July 2005 when shareholders agreed the change from National Grid Transco plc.

The man may be a security guard, keeping watch over the streets below as crowds gather to honour the Atlanta Braves Baseball team, after their 1995 World Series win. The figure is in his manmade environment and the high walls and windows of the buildings that make up this metropolis dwarf this tiny human who in the scale and perspective of a modern city looks incongruous, isolated and insignificant.

These huge motorway systems cut across and up through Shanghai creating fast routes for vehicles. The vast amounts of housing that was removed to make space for the Yan’an Expressway alone, displaced some 200,000 people, who will have been re-housed in high-rise apartment blocks in the suburbs. • Overhead flyovers cross in this mega-junction of the Yan’an Road Central Elevated Expressway, and the Chongqing North/South Elevated Expressway in Shanghai, China. These huge motorway systems cut across and up through Shanghai creating fast routes for vehicles. The vast amounts of housing that was removed to make space for the Yan’an Expressway alone, displaced some 200,000 people, who will have been re-housed in high-rise apartment blocks in the suburbs. Their old homes would have been dwarfed by this monstrous construction of roads. Lit up at night this is a classic view of Shanghai’s futuristic approach to it’s massive and swift development.

  • View looking down at Nanpu Bridge and the circle junction of highways that wrap in a double layer of six lanes up to and over the bridge which crosses Huang Pu River south of the downtown area in Shanghai, China. Taken from a nearby rooftop on the 30th floor, this construction of elevated highways is a symbol of Shanghai’s recent development as it dwarfs the remaining houses below at the average original level of the city, now reaching for the sky. Busy traffic swirls, their lights blurring around in a never-ending stream of cars which is slowly filling Shanghai’s polluted streets.

  • From high above the stacked crates and pallets of duty free merchandise at the British Airports Authority (BAA) secure facility near London Heathrow airport, a blurred forklift truck drives down a corridor moving fast away from two people in the background. In the foreground yellow boxes contain Gordon's Gin and Benson & Hedges cigarettes destined for the airports and aircraft leaving BAA terminals. We see the diagonal lane in this warehouse the size of a hangar, so vast is its scale. The workers in the distance appear dwarfed against the tall shelves of merchandise that they need to organise and keep a tally of. It is a picture of ultimate organisation and the efficient transporting of goods in and out of this logistics hub.
