  • Two 17th century slabs, each 2.00m in length, bearing full-length effigies of a man and woman in Pennygowan Cemetery (Caol Fhaoileann), Salen Isle of Mull, Scotland. This ruined chapel, which served the north portion of the parish of Torosay, is probably of early 13th century date. No medieval references to it have been identified, and its dedication is unknown. The records of the Synod of Argyll in the middle of the 17th century show some uncertainty as to the status of the charge; it is referred to both as a 'Chappell' and as a 'paroach'. Salen (Scottish Gaelic: An t-Sàilean) is a settlement on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. It is on the east coast of the island, on the Sound of Mull, approximately halfway between Craignure and Tobermory.

  • Four crucifixes are hanging on a wire fence a road junction in a Los Angeles suburb. On a bright and clear day, we see the Christian icons against a blue sky, on sale at an outdoor store. The effigies of Jesus are two different sizes, a larger and a smaller and are painted in realistic wood and skin colours with red streaks that symbolise blood emerging from the Holy man's hands, chest, knees and feet where the Roman nails were supposed to have pierced. Other models are seen below the crosses - models of animal garden ornaments and mantelpiece furniture.

  • A Christian crucifix stands encased in a wooden box that has been attached to a panelled wall in Quebec, Canada. The image is white except for the Jesus icon itself and coloured lights which glow on this dark afternoon in the depths of Winter. The religious shrine consists of the human effigy standing a plinth next to faded dried flowers. On the left side are six wheel hubs also fixed to a wire fence that borders this person's property. Their decorative design suggests the Canadian owner likes driving sports or utility vehicles but who is also a worshipper of the Christian faith and believer in idols. Canada's 2001 Census showed, 72% of the Canadian population listed Roman Catholicism or Protestantism as their religion. The Roman Catholic Church in Canada is by far the country's largest single denomination.

  • A man hangs from the hat of Prince Henry, Duke of Viseu, at the Monument of the Discoveries at Belem, Lisbon. The man has found a way to scale part of the 177 foot (54 metre) high celebration to Henry, otherwise known as Henry the Navigator, or Seafarer. The trespasser is dwarfed by the giant, oversized effigies and the man hangs by his fingers and rests his foot on Henry's ship's sail which points out to sea. It is a clear day with blue skies and the slightly yellow stone is side-lit to show each feature of the carvings in fine detail. It is a classic scene of Portguese history depicted during the 1960s fascist Portuguese President Salazar's regime. Henry remains one of ocean-conquering Portugal's most famous of cartographers, whose explorers discovered new routes around Africa and the Atlantic. Although he was called Prince Henry the Navigator by the English, Prince Henry never actually sailed on any of the voyages of discovery he sponsored. Instead, Prince Henry established a school for the study of the arts of navigation, mapmaking, and shipbuilding. This would allow sailors to better guide their ships and to come up with new ship designs. Immediately behind Henry is King Manuel I then poet Luis de Camōes. The eight figures are carved by sculptor Leopoldo Almeida and along with the monument, were commissioned for the 1960 world exhibition to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Henry's death in 1460.

  • Lunchtime Londoners rest in summer sunshine beneath a crucifix, 15th August 2016 in the City of London, UK. Siting on benches outside the church of St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe on Queen Victoria Street. As the effigy of jesus seemingly looks down at her, the lady is asleep with head tilted at an awkward angle, a man sits with the remains of his lunch by his side. First mentioned around 1170, the church got its name when in 1361, Edward III moved his Royal Wardrobe to just north of the church. It was from this association that the church acquired its unique name. It was lost in the Great Fire of London in 1666 then rebuilt in 1695 and destroyed again by German bombing during WW2. when only the tower and walls survived. It was rebuilt and rededicated in 1961.
