  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • "Crooked Lady." A twelve month-old girl who has recently learned to walk proudly strides past an elderly lady with balancing arms outstretched while at the Dulwich Show in South London. There is a marked difference between the youthful, upright posture of the young girl to the hunched and bent stance of the old woman who stands supporting herself on a brolley. It is a picture that compares youth with old age, the delight that a person of later years shows to a child whose life reaches far ahead. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A carer from an elderly peoples' residential home bends down to speak to an old lady who has been taken out for her daily walk in the fresh-air. The lady however cannot walk but seems to be enjoying her daily constitutional from the comfort of her wheelchair that the nursing specialist kindly pushes along a promenade in Frinton-on-Sea in Essex. With her hankie tucked in her sleeve she also seems to be slightly confused as if she might be suffering from a dementia or possibly just old and tired from the hardships after Britain at war. By 2050 the percentage of people worldwide over 65 years will have doubled.

  • An elderly lady widow resident of a tower block, enjoys the company of TV newsreader in her inner-city home. Watching the television news programme on which a black man of perhaps afro-Caribbean descent is presenting, the lady sits with a cup of tea, wearing pink slippers and surrounded by personal possessions that line the sill of her high-rise window, overlooking the Middlesex Estate in the City of London. She is alone apart from the on-screen presence of the male presenter empty of human contact or friendly neighbours. She lives alone in this inner city flat but she is looking after herself showing brushed hair, a lace top and lipstick. The world outside is a depressingly empty landscape of concrete walkways and garage doors, an inner-city environment devoid of human interaction or friendliness.

  • An elderly patient recovers after Hemodialysis blood purifying treatment in the Renal unit at St Bartholomews (Barts) Hospital in the City of London, England. The woman is laying back in an NHS bed being attended to by a nurse after spending some hours with her right arm flat on a cushion and the tubes that feeds her blood by vascular access from her body into the dialyzer, a machine that filters the unpurified blood due to the patient's renal (kidney) failure. It is a bright room and many other machines are operating in this manner. Three quarters of the UK's 19,000 dialysis patients receive haemodialysis rather than Peritoneal dialysis, where a sterile solution containing minerals and glucose is run through a tube straight into the intestine.

  • An elderly lady receives a consultation from a professional beautician in the Clinique Bar at World Duty Free in Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. In a quiet corner of peace and tranquility, the woman's face is examined in detail using a magnifying lens that allows the assistant to see every hair follicle and pore. Amid the busy departures terminal of this international aviation hub, this is a corner of quiet and tranquillity before the woman traveller boards her flight after this few minutes of pampering. • In a field at the town of Boofzheim in the eastern French Alsace region, an elderly Frenchman harvests some of his self-grown carrots crop. Having left his old bicycle standing at the kerb of a narrow access road and in front of a field full of maturing maize, he bends down with much effort to dig in his fork or spade into the rich Alsace earth and lift out his vegetables to take home. This landscape is typically French or German (Alsace borders the western side of Germany and saw much tragic action in WW2) where maize is a nutritious foodstuff for cattle and also for ducks and geese who are force-fed it locally in the making of fois gras and pate.

  • A smart elderly lady walks into a late sun on a chilly afternoon on the Kings Road, Chelsea, London, England. Striding past the viewer she has a determined look on her face, a purpose for reaching her destination without delay and oblivious to other influences. Other shoppers are walking in her directionand their faces are also lit by the sunshine but in the background they are less prominant than the woman in the foreground. With so little highlights, this image is full of low-key shadow making it dark and gloomy. Kings Road Chelsea is a chic street that found modern fame during the Sixties when pretty young things paraded their new-found fashion clothing.

  • The Mr Chelsea Body Beautiful talent competition is held on the Kings Road in London. Entrants are handsome males and girls showing their muscles and well-trimmed bodies. We see hairy chests, pectorals and biceps on-show by these young exhibitionists who parade themselves in the open-air. Slightly behind them there are also two elderly ladies looking like sisters or perhaps twins. They were once beautiful themselves and sit eagerly on a bench against a wall peering at the handsome young men, wishing they were young again. One holds a walking stick and the other grasps a bottle of wine. It is a scene of young and old, of youth and ageing beauty.
