  • Protest for Fernando Montero outside his old workplace. London, UK. On 17th December 2015, Fernando Montero died following a heart attack. For the last 5 years he was employed as a cleaner by outsourcing giant Servest at the Willis Building, in the City. During this time, he was victim of a destructive workplace culture. His supervisors repeatedly shouted at him in public, refused him the right to use the toilet outside of break time, and failed to grant him annual leave. On the day of his death, Fernando called a friend in a state of distress. Too anxious to return to work, due to the treatment of himself and fellow workers. A few hours later, he was dead. For his wife Francia, the link between workplace stress and his death is straightforward: “He passed away of a heart attack because of the stress brought about by the abuse and bullying of his bosses.”

  • A crowd of workers listen to speeches by their trade union during a council strike in Liverpool. A sea of faces looks towards us, their expressions serious and concerned at the loss of their jobs and livelihoods. Their trade union has organised this meeting out in the open air in the city centre, a protest against unfair reduction of earnings and an erosion of working conditions. These people are English Liverpool council workers recently made redundant and have gathered in the city centre to express their willingness to act againist their former-employers.

  • Facing the viewer and from slightly above head height with a long lens, we see a massed crowd of men and women with hands raised in agreement at taking industrial action. These people are English Liverpool council workers recently made redundant and have gathered in the city centre to express their willingness to act againist their former-employers. It is a unanimous decision and all are in agreement with everyone's hands - some higher than others - defiantly up in the air.

  • Separated by four floors, two employees of the auditing company Ernst & Young, make their way along walkways in the main atrium of E & Y's European headquarter offices at More London, London England. Striding confidently between offices, the two people are unaware of each other's presence but make their way from right to left of this tall, upright scene of modernity. The senior person on top may have an advantage from better opportunities, the low-ranking worker below may be needing to rise up the ranks. Morning sunlight floods through the green tinted glass that overlooks Tower Bridge on the River Thames. The term atrium comes from Latin: a large and light central hall or reception of a house where guests were greeted. The depth and height of all levels from near the top to almost the bottom give a sense of vertigo, a dizzying perspective.

  • An odd job maintenance man bends awkwardly on a pair of stepladders to reach an internal light fitting in the cafeteria area of auditing company Ernst & Young's Norman Foster-designed 385,000 square foot European headquarters at More London, England. Dressed in blue shirt and dark trousers and with keys attached to his belt, the balancing man stretches into the hole left by the light to access wiring. To his right we also see an idyllic scene of wild meadow flowers, a carpet of red flora that goes into the distance though incongrously, the reflection of many cafe lights are seen in the sky of the meadow picture. Ernst & Young employs 114,000 people, in 700 locations across 140 countries around the world.

The people are either confidently pacing forward, standing still to seek guidance or simply spontaneously emerging from the shadows to a brighter future, a moment when freedom of choice is offered and the road ahead dictates their fate. It is a scene of corporate theate and each employee will attend this fair where pep-talks from executives, outside speakers and motivational gurus talk to large groups of E & Y personnel so their presence on this day away from the office is vital for the year's business ahead.

  • Two window cleaners safely attached to an outside cradle, wash the large panes of glass at a building at Broadgate in the City of London. While stretching with his long sponge into the corner of this window, one worker on the left is wiping soapy liquid onto the grimy glass before cleaning it off with a squeegee. His colleague on the right is communicating with the cradle operator in the building's roof, way above these men, in order to raise the cradle and allowing the men to achieve the correct operating height. Far below them is the capital's Square Mile, London's financial and oldest area. The famous dome of St Paul's Cathedral can be seen most prominently although it is a grey day across this modern metropolis skyline.

Featuring electronic instruments it is known as a 'glass cockpit' and using a printed checklist manual, they methodically work through dozens of complex systems that require accurate input before the aircraft is ready for take off. Flight navigation computers, fuel and engine settings and radio frequencies all need programming by the two pilots, the captain on the left and the First Officer on the right. These modern airliners have only two pilots in a modern flight-deck as technology superceeded the need for a third member, the flight-engineers of a previous era of aviation.

This is Kimberly Clark's Northfleet Mill which manufactures paper-based products for the hygiene and health market such as tissues and nappies (diapers). The word concrete has been sprayed by aerosol on the ground along with a locating X that marks a confusing and ironic spot for concrete to be found. The high-sided blue walls of the mill factory are smooth and unlike the rough road and to the right the sky is overcast while on the right, it is blue. • Stoke Newington Zombie-a-thon. Hundreds of people joined together in protest in North London to demonstrate against the planned opening of a large Sainsbury's supermarket. Dressed up as zombies the protesters were making the point that they should keep local shops in the area and not have the high street ruined by large chains. The action by Stokey Local says: "In Stoke Newington, even the dead are rising up to say 'no' to a proposed Sainsbury's development." Walking slowly as if in a zombie film the march culminated in passing a Sainsbury's Local supermarket on the High Street. In the middle of June it was announced that a development is being planned for Wilmer Place, just beside Abney Park Cemetery on the corner of Church Street and the High Street – right in the heart of Stoke Newington. The proposed development comprises a large Sainsbury's supermarket and 44 homes and has significant implications for the diversity of the local economy, local employment, transport & traffic, noise and safety and local heritage.
