  • Coaxing a young guest to eat some lunch after a civil wedding ceremony in Essex, England. Family members of parents, aunts and an infant cousin are sitting by an open door when feeding and food is of great importance after hours of formal ceremony. The little boy is reluctant to eat a meal made especially for him before being allowed to eat wedding sweets and cake. This European wedding has taken place inside a covered Orangery at a private wedding and event venue. Rather than marrying in a religious context, the happy couple have preferred to tie the knot in this popular setting for a non-church meaning.

  • In afternoon sunshine, a local mother and her child on scooter pause to talk during a walk in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, South London. Bending down to the child's face, the mum makes her point known to the youngster who stands astride her toy before continuing their journeys around the upper paths of this Victorian public space. Brockwell Park is a 50.8 hectare (125.53 acres) park located between Brixton, Herne Hill and Tulse Hill. Brockwell Hall house and its grounds were acquired by the London County Council (LCC) in March 1891 and opened to the public the following summer. In 1901 the LCC acquired a further 43 acres (17 ha) of land north of the original park.

There are 18 rules translated into 30 languages (including Tibetan) but here these two daft ladies use music and garden tools to vibrate the earth helping the worms to the surface in a 3-metre square plot. International flags are behind but local hero Tom Shufflebotham's 1980 world record still stands at 511 worms out of the ground in half an hour. The fattest worm ever caught weighed 6.6 grams, the most succesful method being hand vibrating a four tyne garden fork inserted approximately 15cms into the turf, known as 'twanging'.

The picture is blurred to show movement during the exercise and the man's face is red with effort. Another instructor is seen in the background holding down another pilot's feet and the floor of the gymnasium is marked for indoor sport.

We look down on to the natural waste as a close-up of the vegetables and fruit scraps that have been thrown away by a city householder in south London. Local authorities encourage the use of compost bins in back gardens (yards) and the proliferation of these efficient containers mean that their residue can be returned to the soil without the expense of transport to landfill. The rotting matter of carrot skins etc. will eventually become a nutritious feed for new plants - and so the cycle goes on.

  • A pet poodle looks towards us in the same way that an RSPCA charity box model spaniel does outside a seaside shop tourist. The shop is selling seaside resort holiday tourist trinkets – a postcard rack has been carefully placed in the middle of the pavement (sidewalk) as holidaymakers pass-by to browse the cheap mementoes. The owner of the poodle has stopped to choose some cards for those at home and allows his dog a little slack on the lead. The dog cranes its neck towards the viewer, matching the posture and stance of the model charity spaniel whose cast sits, posing in a sorrowful and empathy-making show of need, suffering and want – enough perhaps to encourage people to give to this charity, the RSPCA (the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals).

  • The legs of two young girls sit astride their beloved ponies at a gymkhana in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Wearing a smart herringbone patterned jacket, regulation jodhpurs, short polished boots and holding a crop to encourage the horse to perform a series of trick and races, the rider nearest the viewer sits calmly awaiting the next event. The word gymkhana is an Indian Raj term that referred to a place where sporting events took place to test the skill of the competitors. In the UK and east coast of the US, the term gymkhana now almost always refers to an equestrian event for riders on horses, often with the emphasis on children's participation (such as those organised here by the Pony Club). Gymkhana classes include timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole, keg race (also known as "down and back"), flag race, and pole bending.

  • A detail of organic vegetable and fruit matter decomposing inside a home garden composting bin. The rotting matter of banana skins, onions and potato peelings will eventually become a nutritious feed for new plants - and so the cycle goes on.
