It was founded as a Savigniac abbey in January 1135 and was absorbed by the Cistercian order in 1147. It wasn't an easy start for the community who had had to move five times before settling at New Byland, near Coxwold in 1177.

  • Visitors to the ancient site of Stonehenge celebrate the Summer Solstice on the morning of June 21st - the longest day - by dancing in circles while holding hands. The Stonehenge site is a place of pilgrimage for neo-druids and those following pagan or neo-pagan beliefs. The midsummer sunrise began attracting modern visitors in 1870s. Today the stones are owned by English Heritage, the guardians of ancient and historical structures. Most years, substantial police and barriers prevent on-lookers from approaching the stones but on this occasion, revellers were allowed to party long after the early 4.15am sunrise. Stonehenge is a Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monument located near Amesbury in the English county of Wiltshire. Composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones it is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. Archaeologists think that the standing stones were erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC and served as an outdoor observatory from where to watch the constellations. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986.

During King Charles I reign it came into the ownership of the Craven family and was used as a supply base for the King's forces in the area, based in strength at nearby Ludlow Castle in the early stages of the English Civil War. <br />
A skirmish took place at the castle during the English Civil War, in which Stokesay was handed over to the Parliamentarians after a short siege without a pitched battle. It is at present in the hands of English Heritage.

  • A heraldic official and a knight depict local historical events, both medieval figures appearing in stained glass windows part of an auction held by Bonhams of the contents of Stokesay Court, the oldest fortified estate house in Britain originating in the late 13th century.It is at present in the hands of English Heritage. It's a Grade I listed Victorian mansion that was locked up for decades before being sold off after the last member of the rich industrialist family of John Derby-Allcroft whose ancestors could no longer afford the property’s upkeep. Its contents of almost pristine collection of Victoriana personal effects and furniture, clothing, and memorabilia that was largely stored away from the fading and deteriorating qualities of daylight.

  • Part of Warkworth Castle, on 26th September 2017, in Warkworth, Northumberland, England. Although the settlement of Warkworth in Northumberland dates back to at least the 8th century, the first castle was not built until after the Norman Conquest. The town and its castle occupied a loop of the River Coquet. The castle was built at the south end of the town, guarding the narrow neck of the loop. A fortified bridge also defended the approach to the town.

  • On a busy Summer weekend, families enjoy the old Tarr Steps Clapper Bridge over the River Barle in Exmoor National Park, Devon, England. Crossing on the huge stone prehistoric slabs which weigh up to 5 tons apiece, children play with fishing nets, walk dogs and sit enjoying the view below of others who mess about in a small inflatable dinghy on the flowing stream. Located in a National Nature Reserve about 2.5 miles (4 km) south east of Withypool and 4 miles (6 km) north west of Dulverton, this spot is a favourite tourist place in South-West England. This typical clapper bridge construction may date to around 1000 BC. It is 180 feet (55 m) long and has 17 spans and designated by English Heritage as a grade I listed building.

Set in leafy grounds beside Hampstead Heath, these grounds were remodelled by Robert Adam between 1764 and 1779. English Heritage host Summer concerts here and families and music fans spend war summer evenings listening to opera, classical or series of themed performances by visiting artists and groups. Here is also the source of one of London's lost rivers, The Fleet which rises here and flows downhill into the city where it becomes part of the sewer system, emerging in the Thames at Blackfriars.
