  • A young mother holds up her daughter to insert a letter into a post box at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. The girl half-climbs up the red pillar box and tries to get the postage item into the narrow slot which is an even tighter fit because of security considerations - avoiding larger and potentially dangerous packages from entering the airport's postal system. In the background we see the bustle of a departures concourse where British Airways passengers walk past after having checked-in at BA's hub terminal. At a cost of £4.3 billion, Terminal 5 has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • A street beggar has been noticed by a young Italian boy who points out the poor kneeling body to his parent. A stick lies on the ground with a paper cup to collect any spare change offered and a cash customer stands entering his pin number into the automated bank dispenser, his back to the underclass of society. This has become normal for what has become the modern face of Italian society in this once-grand medieval city. The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, Florence has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages.

  • The still new Canary Wharf tower stands tall in the distance with a foreground of a city in turmoil. A still derelict space occupies the space where large offices will be built in the future. Fences stop trespassers from entering a water-filled hole on wasteland. This docklands development in east London is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape. The centrepiece was 1, Canada Square, also known as the Canary Wharf tower.

  • A Concorde supersonic airliner registration G-BOAB flies overhead during its service for British Airways - en-route for a foreign destination. The delta-winged jet was first flown in 1969, entering commercial service in 1976 for 27 years until the disastrous in Paris ended its viability. Aérospatiale-BAC Concorde was a turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner or supersonic transport (SST). With a program cost of £1.3 billion and a unit cost of £23 million in 1977.

  • Londoners seen reflected in multiple plate glass windows on a busy summer lunchtime, in the Square Mile, the capital's historic financial district. As pedestrians walk to and from their surrounding offices, a red London bus continues its journey on its inner-city route past the vertical columns of steel. A red and white plastic chain barrier prevents them from entering the zone where, above - workers are cleaning an upper floor. The large windows are located on the corner of Cannon Street and Walbrook, both ancient thoroughfares in this ancient city, dating back to before Roman occupation.
