  • When nearby offices have emptied on such a warm summer's afternoon, crowds of local workers and tourists sit on the steps between offices both old and new and beneath the towering dome of St. Paul's Cathedral. Entertaining the people is a lone pianist, playing an upright piano as part of City of London's play a piano music festival. Anyone able to play can simply sit on the stool and play the instrument as the feel like it and passers-by can enjoy unsung talents. A jogger dressed in yellow runs past but otherwise, those listening to the impromptu music sit with appreciative respect for the young black man, hunched over the keys.

  • A holiday couple sleep on portable beds in a particularly shabby corner of Bournemouth, a seaside resort in southern England. Above them are posters for this seedy part of the seaside resort on the south coast. Stars appearing in the summer season are an Elvis impersonator and the comedians Joe Longthorne and Les Dawson, who is appearing in Ray Cooney’s show called “Run For Your Wife!” The couple lie on their fold-up chairs, stretched out in a quiet corner below peeling plaster walls and beside a chained-up stack of deck chairs. The scene is a quintessentially English resort town that many from the 60s and 70s recall, when the Spanish package holiday suddenly became more attractive options, than the domestic week at home.

  • In a Brussels Flea Market, two curly-haired twin sisters wander about the cobbled square to play with a an empty push-chair at the Marché du Jeu de Balle, in the Marolles district of Belgium's capital city. In harsh sunlight the girls role-play at mothering, a gender conditioning that all children discover and these females are finding it natural to act as parents at such a young age. An antique doll sits looking in our direction, dressed in frilly clothes and all around is Chinese laquered furniture and other kids' toys like a hobby horse and a trike. At Place du Jeu de Balle Flea Market, you can find an extraordinary mix of household items, vintage clothes, crockery and furniture. This market is open daily from 6am to 2pm and is in the heart of the “Marolles” district, a working-class neighbourhood that was built in the 17th century.

  • Redcoats entertaining in the Empress Ballroom, Butlins Skegness. The idea for the Red Coats came to Butlin early on in the Skegness Camps first season. He saw the first campers walking around looking bored and not making full use of the facilities. They had come to the camp looking for companionship and were not finding it. One of his assistants, Norman Bradford, started to jolly up proceedings by telling a few jokes to the campers assembled in the dining room. Butlin thought this was a good idea and the next day asked his colleague to go out and buy a distinctively coloured blazer - he did, in blue, primrose yellow and white, the camp colours. Butlin was not convinced and asked him instead to buy a red blazer. The Red Coats were then born. Butlins Skegness is a holiday camp located in Ingoldmells near Skegness in Lincolnshire. Sir William Butlin conceived of its creation based on his experiences at a Canadian summer camp in his youth and by observation of the actions of other holiday accommodation providers, both in seaside resort lodging houses and in earlier smaller holiday camps.
