  • A Closed Footpath sign fallen into a hole during pavement works in the south London borough of Lewisham. A blue plastic barrier inexpertly blocks the broken paving stones at a pedestrian crossing in Brockley in south London. And we notice the upside down sign telling the public that the pathway is closed, dangerous to use and evidence of disruption to the inform or users of wheelchairs or childrens' buggies. Comically, the notice is itself, falling down the hole.

  • An early morning commuter makes his way home after his night shift in central London to his home nearby in Herne Hill, SE24 - a distance of approximately 6 miles. Trudging on foot through ever-deepening snow, the showers are still falling as he makes his way along the deserted street. Street lighting makes this quiet landscape glow orange and we look down the road to see only a few parked cars at the kerbsides and the tracks of a few others that have already driven along. Thousands of snowflakes are fluttering to the ground, settling on this part of London's inner-city - an unusual event - and the heaviest precipitation for 18 years.

  • "Then raindrops fell on my head." Looking over the shoulder as a mother pours bath water from a toy seive on to the head of her five month-old baby daughter. The infant looks unsure but otherwise spellbound as the droplets fall, watching them leaving the pot to feel them trickling down. We see the child's trust for her mother and imagine her fascination with tumbling liquid, the feel of it touching her skin. This water is shallow, a child can drown in an inch of water so the mum is supporting the baby's head around the neck in the correct manner. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

Lying on the pavement, just having landed on the ground, we look down from an aerial perspective to see three men largely ignoring her plight: Londoners being known as aloof and unhelpful to others. Afterwards, the woman picks herself up and carries on her route unhurt along this stretch of sidewalk in Camberwell, south London.

  • Workman feed yellow plastic tubing through an under pavement shaft to clear a subterranean blockage, working beneath a round pastry post ad. The works are outside a corner shop (store) in the south London district of Waterloo (celebrating the famous battle victory by Wellington over Napoleon in 1815) and the site is half-covered by a barrier that prevents pedestrians from falling down the opened manhole cover on the pavement (sidewalk). The two men force-feed the plastic piping to free whatever is obstructing the route to another site 50 metres down the street. The visual pun of the coiled cabling and the swirls of the Danish pastries make for a humorous scene.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson who once stood next to Martin Luther-King during the days of segregation and racial discrimination sobs with tears falling down his face at Barack Obama's victory rally before party faithful at a rally in Chicago. His face is large on the many home cinema screens seen across the world's media after this historic political election which saw the election of America's first black Commander in chief. A shopper stops to watch the lunchtime news programme as Jackson weeps with joy thinking of the changes promised to bring to America while the rest of the world looks on hoping for new political directions.

  • Claudette, thirty-three has five kids. She is photographed with her father, Crispin, sixty-six in their neighbourhood as it is now. She feels lucky to have escaped. "I was buying some drinking water with my son, Gito and was on the way back when the ground started rumbling. I cried out, `wow an earthquake!` At that point I looked up to see a two- storey building falling down on me. Large blocks of masonry trapped my arm and fell on my son . My son got free and went for help. Five men returned and tried to lift the masonry with a large stick but they couldn't do it, they left me. I was petrified, the house next door caught alight and I knew for sure I was going to die" Then I felt someone pulling my arm although no one was there. From that moment I struggled to free myself, I pulled so fiercely that I left my finger behind It wasn't until two hours later that I realized."

  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars.

  • London’s Walkie Talkie building viewed from Fenchurch Street during the coronavirus pandemic on the 2nd May 2020 in London, United Kingdom. The central London skyscraper had already melted cars with a “death ray” caused by its reflective glass before it even finished construction. Once open, its sky garden was criticized for falling short of promises to be a truly public space, and for feeling like “an airport terminal.” In addition, the building’s overall concave design has been charged with creating a down draft powerful enough to knock people over. Its successful grant of planning permission also became in itself a public scandal, given that the planner’s report warned that it would cause “significant visual harm.” And now, to cap it all, the U.K.’s Carbuncle Cup Awards have named the tower the ugliest British building completed in 2015.

  • Ducking under the falling spray from a giant wave, a passer-by experience the force of nature from a storm off the coasts of southern England - here at the Port of Dover, Kent. As the water hits the sea defence wall, the seaside town is battered by southerly winds that bring with them huge breakers across the promenade. Adventurous and foolhardy people brave these conditions and stay for as long as possible at the railings then jump out at the last moment before getting doused in salt spray. This man carries on walking and thinks that by bending down, the sea will pass overhead.

He was trapped. We weren't sure if he was alive or dead but we kept looking for him. Then my mother and Emanuel heard each other. • One shovel-full of road grit has been left in a small pile at the kerb of a side road in East Dulwich, South London. Left by workers from the borough of Southwark, this modest supply is symbolic of the controversial problem of local government running low on street grits and salts that help prevent thousands of traffic collisions and pedestrian falls every winter. In January of 2010 (following the equally snow fall of February 2009) councils were caught unprepared for adverse weather which virtually brought towns and cities and rural communities to a standstill. We look down at the fallen snow, trodden by countless pairs of boots which compress the snow and make it an often treacherous surface on which to tread.

  • Duck hunting at dawn on a hilltop south-east of Minot. Byron Grubb retrieves a downed Mallard. The duck hunters travel in the dark to the place they suspect will be the morning feeding roost for ducks. As the sun comes up they have prepared decoys in the field and hide behind some undergrowth in their camouflage clothing. As the sun rises soem ducks take to the air for their morning feed. As they draw near the hunters make female and feeding duck calls to attract the flying birds towards the decoys and to within shooting range. The moment they are close enough the hunters quickly take aim anf fire their shotguns; some of the ducks fall to the ground. A great deal of work and effort goes into this type of shooting, with the result being a few fine Mallards for the pot.
