  • Seen low from behind stage, a male voice choir are lined up to sing during their performance at an open-air temporary auditorium during the Lambeth Show, an inner-city cultural and family event held annually in Dulwich Park, a leafy suburb of South London. The choristers are dressed in white shirts which are untidily untucked from their dark trousers (pants). Their heads echo the purple, yellow and red spots from the overhead lights. The front of stage is covered by a curved ribbed roof structure that arches over the mens' heads. The singers look small in scale to the cavernous height of this ceiling, occupying a small percentage of the frame. We cannot see the choir's conductor, nor their audience but we get an impression of wide area in which to project their voices

  • While officers stand in the quadrangle, Britain's royal family appear on the balcony at Buckingham Palace. The VIPs above have all returned from the nearby parade ground at Horseguards where troops perform a marching ceremony on the Sovereign's birthday which is officially celebrated by the ceremony of Trooping the Colour on a Saturday in June. Traditionally they appear on the palace balcony and wave to royalist crowds. In this picture are members of royalty, now deceased including Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and Pricess Diana. In the distance are officers who have also returned from the parade ground.

  • Dragging a baby's buggy as family members go out for a walk on open snowbound countryside in North Somerset. It is Boxing Day, the day after Christmas and the traditional family walk is more of an event this year with much of Britain covered in heavy snows during a particularly nasty period of climactic freezing conditions. Rather than push, a father pulls his child's buggy through the snow accompanied by another man and a younger boy all of whose legs are in the same walking positions. The female members of the group are out of this picture and in the way that walks often play out, females and males speak with their own gender. The landscape is that of a rural hill with a grey sky filled with more snow cloud and bare wintry trees are behind, their branches bare.

  • Three large family members eat a picnic in a south London park. Sitting to watch an event in the main arena of the Lambeth Couty Show, the large people continue to eat while seated on a blanket on the park grass. Obesity rates in the UK are the highest in Europe and have increased dramatically over the past few years to such an extent that in excess of 20% of the population are now obese and the costs to the UK economy exceed £3 billion per year. The high prevalence of obesity in adults within England is alarming, with national averages of over 40% of males overweight and more than 20% obese in the 16-75 year age range, while in women the averages are lower for the overweight classification but higher for obesity.

  • Gathering outside their house in the East End of London, a family sits together to celebrate 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. A man hangs out a Union Jack flag to accompany the Stars and Stripes on a washing line in the front garden. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.
