  • From a low angle we see, waving a cheery hello to a friend, a rather plump resident of the posh Essex seaside town of Frinton-on-Sea holds on to her oversized sunglasses, her cushion and a portable transistor radio – all of which she has been using whilst on the sea front that we see in the distance behind her round body. Wearing ‘Tory blue’ (the colour favoured by the Margaret Thatcher during the eighties) the lady has her straw hat tied under the folds of fat of an ample chin and appears to be calling an English Coo-ee! call to the out-of-sight acquaintance.

  • Chips, burgers and fast-food is popular at the outdoor the Grade II listed Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill. The Lido is a magnet, an oasis, for city dwellers to escape, if only for an hour from the pressures of fast urban life. Many enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends. A rather overweight young man takes some plastic cutlery after dousing his fries in ketchup as others queue for food. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond.

  • A group of cruise ship passengers prepare for a morning scuba diving in the blue waters off Cancun, Gulf of Mexico. Having left their ship for a few hours excursion into the warm tropical sea, the men and women ready themselves before submerging below the floating platform. With masks and snorkels already in place, they take turns to sit on a step and take the plunge. Many look unfit and unused to diving – especially the fatter, older man in the foreground. But for many this holiday is a trip of a lifetime so they won’t want to miss such an opportunity. The skies are blue and they are miles from land and the worries of work and home. They are here for adventure and have the money to make it happen.
