  • Three figures by artist Elisabeth Frink at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Frink was a leading figure in British sculpture. She studied at the Chelsea School of Art from 1949-1953 and was part of the post-war group of British sculptors, which included Kenneth Armitage and Eduardo Paolozzi, who became known as the Geometry of Fear school.

  • A Parachute Regiment recruit is in mid-flight and leaps across a wide space between scaffolding and a rope net during the 14-week long Pegasus (P) Company selection programme. Seen in silhouette, the man is in full stretch, half-way between the gantry he leapt from and the rope net that he is about to meet. It is an image that describes a mid-point, a half-way position between safety and uncertainty. Known as the Trainasium, it is an 'Aerial Confidence Course' which is unique to P Company. In order to assess his suitability for military parachuting, the Trainasium tests a candiates ability to overcome fear and carry out simple activities and instructions at a height above ground level. Recruits wanting to join the British Army's Parachute Regiment held regularly at Catterick army barracks, Yorkshire, need to pass this and other tests before earning the right to wear the esteemed maroon beret.

The Minories area was a papal peculiar outside the jurisdiction of the English bishops. The abbey was dissolved in 1539 when the property passed to the Crown. The chapel of the former abbey became the Church of Holy Trinity, Minories, and other buildings were used as an armoury and later as a workhouse. In 1686, the area became part of the Liberties of the Tower of London. The Minories area historically hosted a large Jewish community. Minories Holy Trinity was abolished as a civil parish in 1895 and absorbed into the parish of Whitechapel.

Uncertain what the future may hold, the man is old and frail and he looks down to the floor of this front room with worry across his face. He is suffering from cancer and may not live long but the presence of another human being, especially a doctor, is a small comfort from. Someone to share his concerns with and to seek advice from this terminal condition. It is a bright summer morning but even with the sun, it's a gloomy part of the house in which he lives alone.

  • Ninety year-old Mrs Irene Spurling sits with fingers crossed looking to camera with a mild look of mild bemusement. She is actually familiar with celebrity, having been the secretary to the Australian operatic singer Dame Nellie Melba between 1919-1921. She travelled with the diva in the latter years of her singing career, and in 1993 lived in a nursing home in Winchester, Hampshire England. Irene has clear blue eyes, brushed silver hair and seemingly gnarled, arthritic hands and still wears her wedding ring. Despite her years, she is still active and interested in her surroundings.

A window box with geraniums is by the glass and she peeers down to a bleak urban estate, empty of human contact or friendly neighbours. She lives alone in this grim place but she is looking after herself showing brushed hair , a lace top and lipstick. The world outside is a depressingly empty landscape of concrete walkways and garage doors, an inner-city environment devoid of human interaction or friendliness.
