  • A stone wall detail at the Old Smithy, Pennyghael, Isle of Mull, Scotland. In a close-up view, we see the tight fitting stones interlocked to provide strength as well as security for this domestic property. Their are few weeds telling us the wall is well-maintained and it is likely that only local materials have been used in this and other buildings. The origins of building in dry stone, i.e. without the use of mortar, are lost in the mists of antiquity. The use of stone in various builds such as funeral chambers and living accommodation date from the Stone and Iron Ages. Regional styles and patterns of construction do vary throughout the country but the principles of construction established thousands of years ago are still practiced to this day. Regrettably, there is little written historical record of those who practiced the craft in the early days.

  • A young Nepali boy is straining in his last sit-ups during a recruitment test for the Gurkha Regiment, part of a tough endurance series to find physically perfect specimens for British army infantry training. He has to perform 25 straight-kneed sit-ups at a 45° slant both within 60 seconds to pass. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. The Gurkhas have been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • Four friends gather every morning in the summer at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Bare except for their costumes, they stretch and yawn, read a newspaper and lean against a railing all the while swapping anecdotes and complaining grumpily about the state of the world near a brick wall that retains heat. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • Seen from the roof, we see an aerial perspective of an early morning swim for many south London locals as they bathe in the unheated pool of the Grade II listed Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill. The Lido is a magnet, an oasis, for city dwellers to escape, if only for an hour from the pressures of fast urban life. Many enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends. In the centre, a mother helps her young daughter up from the cool morning water before another hot day in August. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. • Detail of an arched stone bridge at Kinlochspelve, Isle of Mull, Scotland. The close-up view shows us the bridge's strength largely given by the beautiful workmanship by those using local materials for this road overpass. Only farm vehicles and small cars generally drive over but such structures need to withstand harsh winters where weather can help them deteriorate. An arch is a structure that spans a space and supports a load. Arches appeared as early as the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamian brick architecture and their systematic use started with the Ancient Romans who were the first to apply the technique to a wide range of structures.

  • Dragging a baby's buggy as family members go out for a walk on open snowbound countryside in North Somerset. It is Boxing Day, the day after Christmas and the traditional family walk is more of an event this year with much of Britain covered in heavy snows during a particularly nasty period of climactic freezing conditions. Rather than push, a father pulls his child's buggy through the snow accompanied by another man and a younger boy all of whose legs are in the same walking positions. The female members of the group are out of this picture and in the way that walks often play out, females and males speak with their own gender. The landscape is that of a rural hill with a grey sky filled with more snow cloud and bare wintry trees are behind, their branches bare.

For the benefit of recruits or as reminders of Soviet discipline, the picture shows a soldier standing at the barbed wire of a generic Gulag holding his AK-47 weapon and dressed in fur hat and uniform from that era. Perhaps those training here were eventually to guard political prisoners though it is a reminder of a fallen ideology. Wustrow was once a WW2 German anti-aircraft artillery position then housed civilian refugees before the eventual Soviet occupation of the former DDR during the Cold War, up until 1990 and the fall of communism and the Berlin Wall. Jogging downhill along a path between silhouetted trees, the man is seen against the strong, low sun in the west. Surrounding the open space are the Victorian homes of Londoners who look out onto this protected location, owned by Lambeth and Southwark councils. It is early December and the winter has yet to grip the capital - the first snows being a short time away - and the mild weather attracts this male to a quiet moment during the day.

The City of London is a geographically small City within Greater London, England, the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. This is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • In a narrow street in Florence, a parking attendant stops to check the windscreen (windshield) of a Fiat 500 car. Squeezed into a space that only a car of this length can occupy, the lady warden bends to inspect the owner's city permit. Traffic police in Florence issue approximately 90 tickets every minute, 1,253 tickets a day so a motorist in Florence receives a traffic violation every 40 seconds, according to official figures. Ticket fines average about 140 euro per motorist bringing about 52 million to city hall each year, making it one of Italy's most heaviest fined cities. Officials note that the money entering the municipal budget through traffic fines has tripled in the last 10 years. The Fiat 500 (Cinquecento) designed by Dante Giacosa was produced by Fiat between 1957 and 1975.

  • Young Nepali boys in army red march though a Pokhara street after being recruited for the Gurkha Regiment. Trying for places in the Gurkha Regiment is part of a tough endurance series to find physically perfect specimens for British army infantry training. They will need to perform 25 straight-kneed sit-ups at a 45° slant both within 60 seconds to pass. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. The Gurkhas have been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • Regular swimmers and bathers enjoy quieter lengths at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido before crowds arrive. After a 6.30am summer opening time, these Londoners escape the crowds and unwind during a warm spell of weather and before another day of city heat. They swim and bathe in the chilly waters of this unheated pool. Brockwell Lido is a large, open-air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994.
