  • The Corran Ferry that crosses on wintry evening on Inverscaddle Bay, Ardgour, Scotland. On a bleak and grey summer evening, with low clouds descending on surrounding hills and mountains, we see the still waters of this Scottish lake in the background. Two foot passengers who travel free stride down a ramp towards the waiting boat. Here, there is a sea crossing and the 10-minute Corran ferry service runs every 30 minutes from Corran to Ardgour, saving a round-trip of over 30 miles. So rurally-relaxed is the service that even if the ramp is raised, a late driver may still make the sailing.

  • A shop assistant demonstrates fish spa with feet in warm water containing tiny fish nibbling at her skin. The woman sits with her legs dangling a transparent tank of green liquid. Gathering on her feet and toes, the treatment encourages little fish to gently exfoliate a person’s feet in a warm footbath. The treatment, which is popular in Japan and America, uses tiny carp fish to painlessly exfoliate and remove dead skin. The fish, which originate in Turkey, have long been used in the Far East to treat skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis. The fish saliva contains an enzyme called diathanol that is said to improve the skin regeneration process. Critics have branded the treatment “unhygienic” claiming that infections could be spread between customers through small cracks in the skin. Fish therapy has been banned in 14 states in America.

  • A female mute swan (pen) incubates her eggs on a nest surrounded by plastic bags waste, in an urban water basin. Six eggs can be seen under her body as she shifts position and checks their location and safety - watching for any signs of hatching. She shares the space with wrappers and bottles, bags and cans tossed from a nearby walkway and perhaps drifted on the water from this urban basin in London's Docklands. The mute swan, which is the white swan most commonly seen in the British Isles, will normally mate at anytime from spring through to summer, with the cygnets being born anytime from May through to July. A swan's nest takes 2-3 weeks and the egg laying process begins with an egg being laid every 12-24 hours. They will all be incubated (ie sat on to start the growth process) at the same time with hatching usually 42 days (6 weeks) later.

  • One shovel-full of road grit has been left in a small pile at the kerb of a side road in East Dulwich, South London. Left by workers from the borough of Southwark, this modest supply is symbolic of the controversial problem of local government running low on street grits and salts that help prevent thousands of traffic collisions and pedestrian falls every winter. In January of 2010 (following the equally snow fall of February 2009) councils were caught unprepared for adverse weather which virtually brought towns and cities and rural communities to a standstill. We look down at the fallen snow, trodden by countless pairs of boots which compress the snow and make it an often treacherous surface on which to tread.

  • Verticrop is the UK's first and currently only vertical farm, the project, developed by Kevin Frediani at Paignton Zoo in Devon, is a revolutionary way to grow large amounts of food in small amounts of space. It uses coya instead of soil to hydroponically grow various green leaves for the animal's consumption in the zoo. This technology produces the same quantity of food as a 16 acre farm in a 50 foot by 75 foot area, and uses only 8% of the water of tradtional agriculture for the same crop. If used properly could be part of the solution to our pending global food crisis
