In Britain, foxes were first established in cities such as London during the 1940s. More recently, other cities have been colonised. Similar patterns of colonisation are found worldwide.

  • An urban north European fox lies dead in a south London road after being killed by a local vehicle. With a fatal injury to its head, the animal has died the previous night in the gutter of a quiet road in the London borough of Lambeth. Its reddish fur and especially its tail - known as the brush - are otherwise unaffected and so may have succumbed to shock rather than major trauma. It is an adult, rather than a cub and will have been missed by its local den. 'Vulpes vulpes' has a long history of association with humans, having been extensively hunted as a pest and furbearer for many centuries, as well as being represented in human folklore and mythology. Because of its widespread distribution and large population, the red fox is one of the most important furbearing animals harvested for the fur trade.

The Surrey Union has been hunting in Surrey since the 18th century and hunts on into the 21st century, albeit within the restrictions of Hunting Act.  The Hunt meets on Tuesdays and alternate Fridays and Saturdays during the main part of the season (but generally Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays after the end of shooting) and is pleased to welcome visitors and supporters, mounted or on foot. It is generally accepted that the Surrey Union dates back to 1798, and was probably so named following the amalgamation of two private packs belonging to the Leech family of Lea Park, Godalming, and the Rev. Samuel Godschall of Albury.  The hunt button to this day bears the letters UH and it is likely the combined pack was known simply as the Union Hunt in its earliest days.

A woman bears the the words by Iggy Fox in commemoration of his untimely death. Anti HS2 campaigners and climate activists have occupied the garden and the trees outside Euston train station for months. The vigil is for the trees which have already been cut down and to commemorate the climate activist Iggy Fox Raphaël Coleman who died a year ago. Because of Covid-19 restrictions all were asked to constantly move and not stay too close. A number of tree protectors have been under ground for 11 days in tunnels dug out over months and bailiffs and the National Eviction Team are working day and night to dig them out. The high speed train project, HS2, will run from London to Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds and it is estimated to cost around 100bn pounds.
