• Going down the escalators, Holborn tube station.
Like many other central London Underground stations, Holborn was modernised in the early 1930s to replace the lifts with escalators.
Shortly after the start of The Blitz, and Holborn was partly fitted out by the City of Westminster as an air-raid shelter. Coming and Going is a project commissioned by the Museum of London for photographer Barry Lewis in 1976 to document the transport system as it is used by passengers and commuters using public transport by trains, tubes and buses in London, UK.

 • 2 men with bowlers and umbrellas crossing the Strand in front of the Royal Courts of justice, London. The first bowler hat was originaly created for Edward Coke, the younger brother of the 2nd Earl of Leicester in 1849. The Bowler went on to be associated with businessmen in the City of London. During the 1950s and 60s men wore the Bowler as part of the City uniform but the practice died out during the seventies. • Air passengers exit and enter a transit train at Chicago O'Hare airport, Illinois USA. They pull suitcases behind them as they negotiate the airport terminal transport system that takes them across the sprawling complex of terminals and tunnels. A large central yellow traffic arrow saying OUT is most prominent telling arriving people to keep in the middle, allowing those departing to enter the carriage from the sides. There is a slight blur to the picture showing the hurrying nature of modern air travel, vastly different from the pioneering days of flight for only the socially elite. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

 • Last Day notice for a now closed business in central London, a victim of the UK recession. The words have been written on the pane of glass in white emulsion paint that has dripped and run before drying properly on the window of this anonymous office building in Holborn, London. Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. The current one was caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages. Picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

 • man is lying down on the steps of Royal Exchange opposite the Bank of England in the City of London, to take a nap under a mid-day sun in the heart of the capital’s financial district. A red double-decker Routemaster bus has stopped in a queue of traffic opposite with an advert for London buses saying ‘We’ve got to get this city to work’ but with tattoos on his arms and his forehead and wearing heavy army-style boots, he is clearly not on his way to a job and therefore out-of-place in this busy part of London. With arms folded and head resting on an unseasonal coat, the man is asleep and going nowhere.

 • A boy plays snowballs at night during heavy snow showers in central London - a rare event for an inner-city. Snowflakes are falling in large amounts settling on this street in Herne Hill, South London. The lad is in his element by going outdoors at night as the showers are falling everywhere about him. He dashes across the picture, running through thousands of snowflakes armed with a snowball destined for his elder sister's head. Relishing the hide and seek game they're playing and the prospect of landing the snow as a direct hit makes him look mischievous and excited.

Making their way through from dark shadow into the pool of urban light, the men are in step with each other - all striding and carrying the sandwich bags bought locally. In an almost cinematic moment of street corner life, we see reflected light from nearby plate glass office buildings that fill in shadows and darker places in the capital's financial heart - the City of London, known as the Square Mile, founded by the Romans in AD43.

 • Having packed nearly all their possessions into a removal company's truck, a family have left this terraced house apart from a telephone that sits on the carpet in the middle of the carpet, on a ground floor home in Herne Hill, South London England UK. The family have taken the precaution of using a professional removal company, rather than trying to move themselves, and we see a yellow storage van parked outside in the street ready to drive the house's contents to the new property. This family home is now empty awaiting its new occupants who will soon arrive with their own items.

 • Dragging a baby's buggy as family members go out for a walk on open snowbound countryside in North Somerset. It is Boxing Day, the day after Christmas and the traditional family walk is more of an event this year with much of Britain covered in heavy snows during a particularly nasty period of climactic freezing conditions. Rather than push, a father pulls his child's buggy through the snow accompanied by another man and a younger boy all of whose legs are in the same walking positions. The female members of the group are out of this picture and in the way that walks often play out, females and males speak with their own gender. The landscape is that of a rural hill with a grey sky filled with more snow cloud and bare wintry trees are behind, their branches bare.

 • Seen from an aerial viewpoint, office workers come and go from a generic banking company. The symmetrical reflections are reproduced from a dividing line of plate glass in the capital's financial district, known as the City of London - or Square Mile. People come and go from this unidentified building entrance and exit to smoke cigarettes under the shelter of the reflective ceiling. Shadows and light diverge towards the bottom. The City of London is the capital's historic centre first occupied by the Romans then expanded during following centuries until today, it has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000.

 • Street art with cutout paper butterflies by Sell Out in the Brick Lane area of Shoreditch, East London, United Kingdom. Street art in the East End of London is an ever changing visual enigma, as the artworks constantly change, as councils clean some walls or new works go up in place of others. While some consider this vandalism or graffiti, these artworks are very popular among local people and visitors alike, as a sense of poignancy remains in the work, many of which have subtle messages.
