  • A young lad enjoys the delights of freshly-fallen snow, in a south London street. With a cheeky grin on his icy cheeks and frosty snow on his bobble hat and coat, the kid has been enjoying a snowball fight with friends who can be seen behind with more snballs in their gloved hands. There is unsalted snow in the road too and this is an opportunity to spend otherwise limited time outdoors when children are increasingly indoors on computer-based activities.

  • Schoolchildren of many ages and ethnic backgrounds spend their morning break-time in their school playground in inner-city London. Faces of a variety of skin colours and expressions look to the viewer as the kids delight in having their picture taken. Their cheeky, mischievous grins make us smile as we remember our own pre-technology childhoods, an era before computers took our natural sense of outdoor fun away.

  • A discarded ironing board with a grinning face leans awaiting refuse collection. The humanoid features form a funny face - the look of a person in turmoil in the hours before being loaded into a refuse lorry and shipped off to landfill or recycling. This is symbolic of our throwaway society, the human interraction between what we make and what we waste.

  • Amid much humour and banter, two meat porters grab hands in Smithfield market during the pre-dawn buying and selling of meat, bought and sold here for 800 years, one of London’s oldest markets. One man’s coat reveals blood stains as he smiles good-naturedly to his fellow worker who is of afro-Caribbean descent. A livestock market occupied the site as early as the 10th century. Approximately 120,000 tons of produce pass through the market each year. As well as meat and poultry, products such as cheese, pies, and other delicatessen goods are available. Buyers including butchers, restaurateurs and caterers are able see the goods for themselves and drive away with what they have bought. Bargaining between buyers and sellers at Smithfield sets the guidelines for meat and poultry prices throughout the UK.

  • A Minnie Mouse balloon brought from Disneyworld, Paris, is carried on a London Underground tube train. The face of Minnie obscures the young girl's own features but to her right is a friend who has also returned to their home city after some time enjoying the Disney theme park in the French capital. Another train passenger seems amused by the cartoon character's presence in these otherwise drab surroundings - Minnies' smile to the camera makes for a humorous moment for these commuters under the streets of London.

Children of all ages along with parents grin at the out-of-sight puppet entertainment during this public festival of amusements and stalls in London's inner-city. Only one young girl sits unimpressed at the standard of comedy. She sits with her mother looking serious while the kids nearby roar with laughter - hugely involved with the show. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • In the middle of a field serving as a grass car park, three couples celebrate the Ladies' Day event at Royal Ascot. Holding their glasses to toast a grand day out at this annual sporting event in the social calendar, the gentlemen are dressed in formal top hats and tails, the ladies in wide hats and summer dresses. Grinning and looking smug in their upp-class social status, they are seated eccentrically and comically around a plastic table with a tablecloth, two Candelabras and their picnic lunch plates full of fine food.

  • Posing in the open doorway of an Airbus A319CJ Business jet, four female cabin crew members wear the uniforms of Qatar Airways whose airline has made a public relations stop at the Farnborough Air Show to publicise this new model of executive service. Airline stewards and stewardesses are nowadays more commonly referred to as cabin crew or flight attendants. They stand close together with broad grins showing their varied ethnicity. • A young girl volunteer is caked in mud after an activity on a Raleigh International expedition in the rainforests of Brunei, Borneo. Beaming from ear to ear, the lady relishes her time here in one of the remotest and most dangerous habitats on the planet. It will have been a life-changing experience for her and her new-found friends from all over the world who will have had to raise several thousands of sponsored Pounds for the privilege of spending two months away from a dull, comfortable life at home, rather than building community projects like bridges or schools. Raleigh International is a charity that provides adventurous and challenging expeditions for people from all backgrounds, nationalities and ages, especially young people. Over the last 23 years, 30,000 people have been involved in more than 250 expeditions to over 40 countries.

  • A young lad of 10 poses for a portrait taken by his brother while holding the hand of his young nephew. Confusingly, the 10 year-old uncle and the 1 year-old child are closer in age than the two brothers. The older boy is on holiday in Malawi visiting expat family in the then capital, Blantyre, so named after the town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, where the explorer David Livingstone was born. Both boys stand in the dust of a back yard where a broken windmill remains upright in the intense brightness of mid-day. It is a scene of awkward and gangly boyhood versus the confidence and innocence of young childhood and their posture is exaggerated by differing heights. Kodachrome film has a wonderful magenta colour cast in mid-tones reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded look.

  • As early morning mist makes its way across moors and mountain grasses, we see a dead ewe that lies decomposing at a collapsed dry stone wall on Nether Moor, Derbyshire. The sheep has been left behind the rest of the farmer's flock and as it decomposes, its eyes have already been pecked out and its white front incisor teeth gaping, as if grinning in death. This is a loss of revenue of vital income at a time of economic hardship for those in this tough industry. In the background we see the moors rising to it summit in the area called Edale, a valley in North Derbyshire, 15 miles west of Sheffield, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Edale valley is a loose collection of scattered farmsteads or 'booths' as they are known which grew up around the original shelters or 'boothies' used by shepherds when tending their sheep on the hillsides.

The poster shows Boeing staff smiling towards the viewer whi;le standing in front of a 737 airliner, specially adapted for business and corporate use, rather than for just economy and premium passengers. The wokforce seem overjoyed to work for this American aircraft manufacturer, grinning to the man who is rushing past their smiling faces without the slightest interest. Farnborough is a world aviation and aerospace trade fair held every two years in Hampshire, England. 2008 will be the 60th year for exhibitors like Boeing to demonstrate and showcase their airliners to the world's aviation industry.

  • Winning and losing contestants line up to receive their prizes at a gymkhana in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The point of focus is a young cheeky-faced girl adorned with a winners’ special rosette and she grins cheekily to her friend alongside. Far right another girl less satisfied inspects her own rosette. The word gymkhana is an Indian Raj term that referred to a place where sporting events took place to test the skill of the competitors. In the UK and east coast of the US, the term gymkhana now almost always refers to an equestrian event for riders on horses, often with the emphasis on children's participation (such as those organised here by the Pony Club). Gymkhana classes include timed speed events such as barrel racing, keyhole, keg race (also known as "down and back"), flag race, and pole bending.

  • A portrait of a mother in her 41st year has been gathering heather in handfuls and holds up her young child who grins towards his father who is taking the picture at a park near the Essex seaside town of Southend. It is the summer of 1960 and the mum's dress is styled from the previous decade: blue with white spots and pearl necklace. She too is smiling as she grasps the flowers and her child on a warm day. Oddly, the boy looks as though he is wearing a girl's dress which may have been a hand-me-down from an older sibling or just the trend then.
