  • Following UK commercial driving law, a lorry driver relaxes by reading in a window at the M40 motorway services in Warwickshire, England. Leaning back while engrossed in his book, the man is sitting in sunlight on this summer's day. Outside is a poster advertising the premium ice cream brand, Magnum. A girl is shown also lounging about enjoying a Magnum on a beautiful sun-kissed beach, with the sun reflecting on a calm sea. We see Magnum's web site and their products of Classic and White chocolate snacks in their wrappers. The man is oblivious to the nature of the ad but it lends a sense of paradise versus reality, between the fantasy of youth, natural beauty and the reality of an older working man on the road.

  • Seen from a high viewpoint, we overlook loading of roll cages at the Sainsbury's 700,000 sq ft (57,500sq m) supermarket warehouse and distribution depot at Waltham Point London England. This is the largest of 10 distribution centres using an automated ordering system for receiving food direct from suppliers by truck through 170 dock doors. Long-distance vehicles depart every two minutes, 24 hours a day, 364 days a year to 80 UK stores and handling 2.5m supermarket cases a week. The temperature is just above freezing point in a series of chill, ambient and frozen chambers. Real-time ordering means that stores can obtain requested stock within hours. Food orders are conveyed (at 2 meters a second) with sorter systems that group products together, ordering them to favour the layout of specific stores, optimising how the shelves are stacked.

  • From high above the stacked crates and pallets of duty free merchandise at the British Airports Authority (BAA) secure facility near London Heathrow airport, a blurred forklift truck drives down a corridor moving fast away from two people in the background. In the foreground yellow boxes contain Gordon's Gin and Benson & Hedges cigarettes destined for the airports and aircraft leaving BAA terminals. We see the diagonal lane in this warehouse the size of a hangar, so vast is its scale. The workers in the distance appear dwarfed against the tall shelves of merchandise that they need to organise and keep a tally of. It is a picture of ultimate organisation and the efficient transporting of goods in and out of this logistics hub.

  • Fishermen from the Maldives haul aboard a yellow fin tuna to the deck of a dhoni boat in the Indian Ocean. The tuna has been swimming across the Indian Ocean non-stop since birth but after being dragged up with hooks, the 50kg fish will be clubbed to death by smashing its skull with repeated blows. Next it will be gutted efficiently with sharp knives and immediately plunged into ice containers to cool the flesh, reducing the risk of self-deteriorating flushed blood which renders it unfit for consumption under EU law (its live internal core temperature is 40 degrees centigrade). When as many fish have been caught before dark using hand and line method, rather than nets, the boat presses on to the processing factory at Himmafushi where they're filleted and boxed for export to Europe and in particular, for UK supermarkets like Sainsbury's.

  • A Supermarine Spitfire awaits refuelling with Avgas 100LL fuel at Farnborough International Airshow media launch. The pilot is the air show's Flight Operations Director Rod Dean who stands on the wing of this old WW2 warbird fighter of the British Royal Air Force and the refueller man has unhooked the nozzle from the bowser and hauls it across the concrete towards the aircraft. Hazardous and flammable signs are on the truck's rear. Avgas 100LL is a fuel designed for piston engines and is the most commonly used aviation fuel, dyed blue for easy visual identification. 100LL, spoken as "100 low lead", contains a small amount of tetra-ethyl lead (TEL), a lead compound that reduces gasoline's tendency to spontaneously explode (detonation or "knock") under high loads, high temperatures and high pressures - perfect for aerobatic performance flying.

English Falmouth Estuary oysters have become highly sought-after around European restaurants and we see a freshly-caught specimen still in its shell after being landed from a traditional Falmouth antique working sail boat (fishing without mechanical power is a rule on this local fishery) that still dredge harvested oysters from the river bed using traditional methods unchanged since Victorian times. The fisherman's muddy fingers can be seen lifting (or shuck) the crustacean slightly from the shell with an old oyster knife to display this wild, native Fal oyster which is known for its distinctive sweet, fresh and delicate flavour.

  • Four small vessels belonging to traditional oyster fishermen use nets to catch a new harvest of shellfish aboard their antique boat from the Fal Estuary. On calm waters, the oystermen have harvested on the River Fal in the same traditional and highly sustainable fashion, without the use of mechanical power, for more than five hundred years, being widely grown along the whole Cornish coast when the Romans invaded, and by 1602 they were being caught in much the same way as they are today, using thick, strong nets, called dredges. Byelaws banned oyster dredging by mechanical means, forcing local fishermen to rely on wind and tide in purpose-built, sail-powered Falmouth Working Boats. Although most oyster fishermen in Falmouth have other seasonal jobs, for the most experienced and committed fishermen oysters provide a decent year-round livelihood.

  • A slightly comical scene of modern air travel as two lady passengers haul matching suitcases at the British Airways self-check-in kiosk at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. The self-service kiosks that have been developed to allow customers to process their own ticketing on arrival at this aviation hub for British Airways. Once they've chosen their seat and printed a boarding pass, they can go straight to the Fast Bag Drop desk at the airport. There, baggage will be tagged by an agent and sent to the aircraft. At a cost of £4.3 billion, Terminal 5 has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • A Post Office employee hauls a cart full of post onto the station platform on the Mail Rail system. The Post Office Railway, also known as Mail Rail, was a narrow-gauge driverless underground railway in London, built by the Post Office with assistance from the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, to move mail between sorting offices. Inspired by the Chicago Tunnel Company it operated from 3 December 1927 until 31 May 2003. It ran east–west from Paddington Head District Sorting Office in the west to the Eastern Office at Whitechapel in the east, a distance of 6.5 miles (10.5 km). It had eight stations, the largest of which was underneath Mount Pleasant, but by 2003 only three stations remained in use because the sorting offices above the other stations had been relocated.

  • A Supermarine Spitfire awaits refuelling with Avgas 100LL fuel at Farnborough International Airshow media launch. The pilot is the air show's Flight Operations Director Rod Dean who stands on the wing of this old WW2 warbird fighter of the British Royal Air Force, before the refueller man unhooks the nozzle from the bowser and hauls it across the concrete towards the aircraft.
