  • Two shipbuilders chat beneath the heavy lifting cranes at the Polish Gdansk shipyard - once known as the Lenin Shipyard but still the largest of its kind in modern Poland. The grimy and hazardous working conditions make for a dangerous environment in which to work and the two men in the foreground and those behind, wear bright yellow hard hats, protecting them from steel edges and rusting machinery. Here in 1980 the union Solidarity (Solidarnosc) was conceived and was partly responsible for a growing dissent against Communist rule, ultimately contributing towards the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lech Walesa started his political career as an electrical technician here, going on to lead Solidarity and then to become President of a democratic Poland. Today Gdansk is a major industrial city and shipping port.

  • A life belt hangs on a cross-shaped post, all painted a vivid red as the sun sinks down below the horizon and beyond the historic Bamburgh Castle, in Northumberland, northern England. Lit with a strong off-camera flash we see the slightly blurred device, invented for saving lives at sea, with a ghostly corona around its form, against a fading blue sky. The rope dangles near the ground, around which the grasses of the dunes blow in a faint breeze. Only the foreground is lit by the flash and the distant castle building and shoreline. We see such equipment and imagine safety and rescue and also jeopardy and hazards at sea. Supplied for those taking risks and making stupid decisions makes these items essential on coastal areas.

  • A female mute swan (pen) incubates her eggs on a nest surrounded by plastic bags waste, in an urban water basin. Asleep on the nest, she shares the space with wrappers and bottles, bags and cans tossed from a nearby walkway and perhaps drifted on the water from this urban basin in London's Docklands. The mute swan, which is the white swan most commonly seen in the British Isles, will normally mate at anytime from spring through to summer, with the cygnets being born anytime from May through to July. A swan's nest takes 2-3 weeks and the egg laying process begins with an egg being laid every 12-24 hours. They will all be incubated (ie sat on to start the growth process) at the same time with hatching usually 42 days (6 weeks) later.

Construction work has been suspended again on the Pinnacle in the City of London. Brookfield restarted work last September after developer Arab Investments put together a new finance package. The Bishopsgate Tower, informally referred to as The Pinnacle, was to be a 288 m (945 ft), 64-storey skyscraper in the centre of London's main financial district.

  • Sheep up for auction kept behind fencing to avoid the spread of diseases at the ancient annual Priddy Fair in Somerset, England. A sign issued by the government's disease control policy, unauthorised visitors are forbidden to enter the catle pens, avoiding the spread of epidemics like Foot and Mouth. According to tradition, Priddy Sheep Fair moved from Wells in 1348 because of the Black Death, although evidence has been found of a Fair being held at Priddy before that. There is a local legend, which says that as long as the hurdle stack shelter remains in the village, so will the Fair.

  • A warning sign on an alpine mountaintop for skiers, tells them of a closed piste and of a no marked and controlled trail. From the heights of this Alpine mountain, we look down the snow-filled valleys on a beautifully clear winter’s day. Lower peaks stretch into the distance and it is a landscape of extreme beauty and wonder. Little pollution or smog is evident and we see the sign that is situated in plain view of skiers who have dismounted their cable car in Liechtenstein. The warnings are written in 4 languages: German; French; Italian and English for the sake of international skiing enthusiasts who may wish to venture off-piste, taking their own risks but enjoying as much more adventurous form of free skiing.
