• Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher is seen giving a party speech at the 1991 Conservative Party Conference in Blackpool, Lancashire, a full year after being removed by her own colleagues the previous November. Her softer and perhaps pensive expression contrasts with her reputation of the Iron Lady with a gaze that made her opponents uncomfortable. She seems distant here, perhaps recalling her great days in office when she was a powerful figure in world politics. She is wearing the same favourite two-tone blue suit with wide shoulders and a pearl ear-rings as she wore the year before when still in office. The ambient stage lights emphasize the blonde highlights in her hair.

 • Mrs Farzana Samimi on her talk show ‘Banuî with psychiatrist, Mohammed Yasin Babrak.

Farzana’s show centres on problems faced by Afghan women - largely a taboo subject. Currently, for security reasons guests have to talk by phone: “I remember one guest - a young girl - who was forced ( by her parents) to marry.” Says Farzana. “But because she came on TV, her parents threatened to kill her”.

One of Farzana’s colleagues was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Kabul in May 2005 and Farzana’s husband wants her to stop presenting but she says: “The show is very important. For a lot of women, their only source of help is from the TV.”
A survey of women in Kabul found that 98 percent suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic depression or severe anxiety. Dr Babrak, Farzana’s co presenter says. “Most women who come to me suffer from mood swings and schizophrenia,"
Farzana can empathize: “During the Taliban I was depressed and I am still traumatised. It took me two years after the collapse of the Taliban to stop wearing the burkha. Educated women wouldn’t come out on the streets even after the Taliban fell. But gradually women got more courage and things are changing.”

 • A special effects model maker artist works on a clay head of actor Pierce Brosnan in his role as James Bond in the 1996 film GoldenEye, filmed at an old Rolls-Royce factory at the Leavesden Aerodrome in Hertfordshire. Using publicity and studio head shots of Brosnan, the woman refers to the glossy prints to sculpt the contours and shape for a scene requiring a miniature version of 007. GoldenEye (1995) is the seventeenth spy film in the James Bond series, and the first to star Pierce Brosnan as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. The film was directed by Martin Campbell and is the first film in the series not to take story elements from the works of novelist Ian Fleming.

 • We see the head and shoulders of a man in military uniform who stands motionless beside the American flag. he is at a graduation ceremony for United States Air Force pilots who have just passed a week-long survival courseheld at the Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington. Its highy-trained personel conducts a survival, escape and evasion course which combat pilots and air crew need to pass before rejoining their units for real-time warfare. Conducted, in hangars and the surrounding forests, it forms part of an extensive physical and psychological assessment of young aviators on active service. In the future any one of them may be shot down behind enemy lines and need to use the lessons passed-on here to help facilitate their rescue by US forces. One pilot who passed this course in 1991, himself a Spokane-born boy, was F-16 pilot Scott O'Grady. He put his skills learned here to the test while evading Serb forces before being airlifted to safety and a hero's Presidential welcome.

 • An elderly man shields his eyes from bright light while walking along Piccadilly in late afternoon sunshine. Holding his hand across his eyes, the man walks westwards along this fashionable shopping street from Piccadilly Circus in the direction of Hyde Park Corner. He seemingly walks alongside a younger woman and many other commuters are heading the same way, all walking or about to pause at the bus stops along this street that will take them home or in the direction of Victoria Station. The picture is shot from a low angle and the subjects are unaware of all but their direction, pace and eagerness to reach home.
