• Art installation 'I am here' on a partially empty apartment block in North London by artists Andrea Luka Zimmerman, Lasse Johansson and Tristan Fennell. i am here addresses a particular socio-political as well as economical situation specific to where it is installed, on the façade of Samuel House, part of Haggerston & Kingsland Estate. The housing estate is located alongside Regents Canal in-between Kingsland Road and Victoria Park in Hackney, London. Over the past 10 years this area has become increasingly gentrified. As a consequence the transformation of the area surrounding Samuel House has been radical and the estate now finds itself wedged in-between luxury loft apartments and expensive live/work spaces.
Whilst this rapid transformation has been going on in the area, nothing much has changed on Haggerston & Kingsland Estate since the early 1980’s. That is, except from an ongoing steady decline due to lack of maintenance and a gradual emptying of the estate. Since at least 2004 no new residents have been accepted, and instead, vacated flats have been boarded up.

 • Employees in a central London office work dilligently alongside the reminders of vacations that colleagues and friends have taken. Picture postcard souvenirs have been lined up as a display of the perfect holiday when they have returned to work to put their shoulders to the grindstone. It is a scene of wishful thinking, of 'wish you were here!' and of looking forward to the next break from the toil of their careers so by showing the idyllic locations of their dreams with these visual reminders, can they imagine the beauty of these places: Tenby in south Wales, the Lake District in northern England and a country hall set in, perhaps, the Scottish hills. An out of focus worker stares intensely into his PC, perhaps thinking of escapism and a life outside these four walls.

 • A Queue Here sign on the road at the Corran Ferry crossing on Inverscaddle Bay, Ardgour, Scotland. On a bleak and grey summer evening, with low clouds descending on surrounding hills and mountains, we see the still waters of this Scottish lake in the background. A stone wall separates the waters from the A861 road that circles this Highland region, from Moidart to nearby Fort William. Here, there is a sea crossing and the 10 minute Corran ferry service runs every 30 minutes from Corran to Ardgour, saving a round-trip of over 30 miles. Motorists are asked to queue (line) up and await the ferry to accept passengers.

 • An elderly couple sit in peace on a quiet beach in the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. In a classic English beach holiday scene, the husband and wife relax, reclining in a pair of deckchairs at a kiosk that dispenses these quaintly British beach chairs. A sign telling other holidaymakers to collect and pay for their time in them appears on the freshly-painted clap-board wall. As the lazy completes word puzzles in her magazine, the gentleman reads his regular copy of the Daily Mirror tabloid newspaper. He is tanned, perhaps spent his summer tending his garden back home but here on holiday, they both have the chance to spend some time together away from home, in a resort known for its beaches and coastal adventures.

 • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth.

 • A group of young boys play in the calm waters of the Indian Ocean on Meedu Island, in the Republic of the Maldives. The shallows are a safe playground for these kids who swim and splash about in the clear shallows next to two small dhoni boats often used to fish using traditional hand and line, an important source of income for remote communities in this island nation. The sea is perfectly clear blue and the sand coral-white, in jeopardy to rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to flooding. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. As a polite message asking taxi drivers not to park on this spot, the unknown person wants this location kept clear between certain hours - something one driver has chosen to ignore because it is a place for cabs to pick up fares beneath the newest of London's skyscrapers, known as the Walkie Talkie in the heart of the capital's financial district aka The Square Mile. They pull suitcases behind them as they negotiate the airport terminal transport system that takes them across the sprawling complex of terminals and tunnels. A large central yellow traffic arrow saying OUT is most prominent telling arriving people to keep in the middle, allowing those departing to enter the carriage from the sides. There is a slight blur to the picture showing the hurrying nature of modern air travel, vastly different from the pioneering days of flight for only the socially elite. Their family have owned this land for generations, the family would choose to stay if the volcano erupts again. "I was born here, I grew up here, I will die here, I've never been afraid here," says Baldassare. This is why Vesuvius is the most dangerous volcano in the world." • A shoeless child wanders on to Eldoret’s main dump undeterred or unaware of the constant risk of cuts from broken glass and infection from needles dumped here by the hospital . ( model release unavailable)

The Dump nick named by the locals, ironically, as ‘California’ is home to a community of Kenyans who make their living here recycling plastic, metal charcoal and even scavenging for food either for themselves or for their pigs. The average adult here earns about 150 -200 Kenyan shillings (£1-1.30) The consequences for those who work here on a regular basis including woman and children as young as 7 is tough; with disease, injury, substance abuse and even the threat of violence an everyday reality.

A closed herd with no outside influence from other herds off site (apart from the introduction of a bull) the aim is that the cows have one calf per year to keep them milking and to replenish their stocks. • Samuel Makomi 42 (Photographed on edge of dump). "I use to make bags but was fired from my job so I have worked here ever since , its been over 20 years now. “Its not a safe or nice place to work. You can get injuries here from bottles and infections from needles; I got malaria once and was ill for a month. There is fighting here as well when the boys get high or they are fighting over something valuable; and fatalities. A man was high and slipped and fell under the path of a lorry – another broke his leg. I would like to start my own business selling shoes or clothes but cannot afford to save. I make about 150 – 200 shillings a day ( £1-1.50).”
