  • Two children lay down on the ground at the foot of a solid dry stone wall, up in the hills of the area of northern England known as the Dales, near Settle, Yorkshire. The two brother and sister have their faces against the rocks that serve as boundaries and enclosures for farmers and land owners. These walls were built by tradesmen called Wallers, a dying tradition and skill. Dry stone walls are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. The wall is held up by special construction methods and by its weight. The stones must be carefully selected by shape to ensure that they have a large contact surface area with their neighbours and so do not slip. They are a legacy of the movement towards enclosure of common farming and grazing land as English society moved away from medieval feudalism. Model released.

  • Hidden in a wooden hut, a group of bird-spotting ornithologists peer through binoculars at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) rreserve at Rainham Marshes, Essex England. Watching dozens of wintering birds, the group are intensely looking through their optical equipment in anticipation of seeing rare breeds at this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a wetland alongside the River Thames, 20 miles from Central London. A narrow slit is open to keep them hidden from sight so leaning on elbows and with a guide sheet in front to identify particular species, they concentrate on their hobby. The RSPB has 200 nature reserves covering almost 130,000 hectares, home to 80% of Britain's rarest or most threatened bird species. Its role is to speak out for birds and wildlife, tackling the problems that threaten the environment.

The anti-poll tax rally in central London erupted into the worst riots seen in the city for a century. Forty-five police officers were among the 113 people injured as well as 20 police horses. 340 people were arrested.

  • From a low angle, we see the crowds of racing upper classes in the members' enclosure, gathering to watch a winning horse pass-by at the Ascot races. Top-hatted gentlemen accompanied by ladies in pink and girls in white lace dresses mingle in the area reserved for the privileged at this famous race event. The back quarters of the winning horse with its veins and muscle shine through its paper-thin skin reveal an athletic animal bred for speed and endurance.

  • A boy plays snowballs at night during heavy snow showers in central London - a rare event for an inner-city. Snowflakes are falling in large amounts settling on this street in Herne Hill, South London. The lad is in his element by going outdoors at night as the showers are falling everywhere about him. He hides behind a parked car at the kerbside, crouching low to avoid detection by his elder sister. Relishing the hide and seek game they're playing and the prospect of landing the snow as a direct hit makes him look mischievous and excited.

  • Lying in undergrowth, a camouflaged British infantry soldier is seen looking down the telescopic sight of the new British-made Long Range L115A3 sniper rifle on Salisbury Plain, Warminster, England. Sniping means concealment, observation and assassination, a strategy the British are using more against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Swiss Lapua .338 inch rounds (8.59mm) travel at sub-sonic speeds of 936 metres/sec, finding its target accurately up to 1,100 metres. The rifle weighs 6.8kg with telescopic image-intensified scopes to 25x life size vision, made by Schmidt & Bender. Front-mounted ‘suppressor’ minimises the signature normally compromising snipers’ position. At £23,000 each, a £4 million contract has been awarded to Accuracy International, to provide the Army, Royal Marines and RAF. The British say this is the best sniper rifle in the world.

The duck hunters travel in the dark to the place they suspect will be the morning feeding roost for ducks. As the sun comes up they have prepared decoys in the field and hide behind some undergrowth in their camouflage clothing. As the sun rises soem ducks take to the air for their morning feed. As they draw near the hunters make female and feeding duck calls to attract the flying birds towards the decoys and to within shooting range. • We are looking from behind a group of red uniformed meat market traders who are manhandling joints of pork from the back of a meat wagon at Macau's main meat market, on the Rua Sul do Mercado de Sao Domingos, just off the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, in Central Macau. The men have on hooded red tunics that hide the bloodstains of dead animal carcasses, a very practical choice of colour (color). One man has half a pig on his shoulders while another holds a leg in his left hand. The animal carcasses look heavy and they are both struggling under their weight. There is much more meat to be offloaded from the truck and the men queue up to take their turn and remove them for sale inside the market building. Besides historical Chinese and Portuguese world-heritage relics, Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma and this temple dedicated to the seafarers' goddess dates from the early 16th century.

  • Visitors to the Annual Chelsea Flower Show walk through Sloane Square after buying potted shrubs at the show that now hide their faces as they make their way towards the underground station surrounded by bemused passers-by. They have both just left the show on the last day of the show when members of the Royal Horticultural Society and the general public are invited to buy those plants and shrubs that have been displayed all week. It is the perfect summer May afternoon in west London, when lovers of horticulture have gathered from across the country to admire the ultimate in plants and flowers in the grounds of Chelsea Hospital.

  • Duck hunting at dawn hunkered down for camouflage on a hilltop south-east of Minot, North Dakota, United States. The moment they are close enough the hunters quickly take aim anf fire their shotguns; some of the ducks fall to the ground. A great deal of work and effort goes into this type of shooting, with the result being a few fine Mallards for the pot.

  • A boy plays snowballs at night during heavy snow showers in central London - a rare event for an inner-city. Snowflakes are falling in large amounts settling on this street in Herne Hill, South London. The lad is in his element by going outdoors at night as the showers are falling everywhere about him. He dashes across the picture, running through thousands of snowflakes armed with a snowball destined for his elder sister's head. Relishing the hide and seek game they're playing and the prospect of landing the snow as a direct hit makes him look mischievous and excited.
