  • Behind railings that honoured American aviator Wilbur Wright at the annual Le Mans air show, France, seven spectators gaze upwards to a clear sky where a lone but unseen aircraft performs in front of the French crowd. Wright made 110 flights at Le Mans and nearby Auvours in 1908 and his legacy for French and global aerospace lives on at events like this where a replica of his Wright Flyer was also exhibited. It is a bright summer's day and the blue sky has vapour trails left by a previous display pilot's jet engine. A prominent British Union Jack flutters on a pole and the words 'invites' (for invited guests only) are printed on to sheets of paper. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • High up in the picture, two employees (one in traditional Arab clothes, the other in western dress) of Bahrain International Airport stand on the edge of a passenger 'air bridge' to oversee the departure of an airliner at Bahrain International Airport as it is pushed back by an unseen airport vehicle. It is night time and the ramp (or aircraft parking tarmac) is illuminated by yellow artificial light with the bridge itself, lit my overhead fluorescent tubes that give a blue-green tint above the mens' heads who watch the nose of a departing airliner. It is slowly taken backwards on its way to the runway take-off position with its passengers on-board. We see only the fuselage, wings and part of its engine cowlings but not the undercarriage wheels, nor the ground itself. The men look as if they are floating in mid-air, being disembodied from the rest of the airfield's equipment.

  • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. At night, life takes on a diferent personality when bars and up until the 60s, prostitution gave the district a bad reputation in the past but nowadays tourists and the chic frequent its streets and traditional 'Fado' (classical Portuguese opera) bars.

  • Taken from a tall apartment block, we see an aerial view overlooking the ex-Portuguese colony of Macau's Chinese Christian cemetery of San Miguel. The Cemiterio de São Miguel Arcanjo (Saint Miguel Catholic Cemetery) is located right in the middle of Macao island, on Estrada do Cemiterio and host the graves of the old Dutch and Portuguese colonials that helped shape Macau, now one of the world's most densely-populated city. We see a single Chinese lady walking along one of many criss-crossing diagonal pathways carrying a red bucket of water to tend these graves. She appears tiny compared to the multitude of plots, some which have crosses and others which have simple headstones. They are mostly neat and tidy but some have become overgrown with grass sprouting up. Macau's gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese. The Macau Special Administrative Region is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover.

  • Leaping into the air all together are young members of the Donegal High School football cheerleaders squad in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. On a Saturday afternoon as their team called the Braves take a break during their inter-school match, the young ladies wearing matching Irish-green colours leap in free manoeuvre on the instructions of their trainer. They have left their pom-poms on the grass and we see the rest of the sports-loving crowd in the bleachers on the far side of the pitch. Some choose to do mid-air leg splits, some a rather unelaborate twist and of some we only see arms merging with other bodies while others barely make it off the ground, such is their poor timing but there is generally lots of effort and energy in this brief spontaneous moment.

  • Looking downwards from a high vantage point on a hillside, we see one mountain-biker leading a second cyclist as they traverse across a sunlit mountainside near the hamlet of Masecha in the parish of Triesenberg, Liechtenstein. The late afternoon sun is low across the valley and there is a haze that partly obscures and refracts light over the distant landscape. There is snow on the distant mountain peaks but the countryside has the brown look of a snowless winter. Far off villages and hamlets hug the hillsides and golden light floods the scene. The tiny landlocked Principality of Liechtenstein is bordered by the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland and is a winter sports resort, though best known as a tax haven, attracting companies worldwide to register their assets in secrecy.

  • Giant model in red and white spotted display of artist Yakoi Kusama whose collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Selfridges whose red campaign theme accompanies a life size model of the artist in the department store windows and Oxford Street entrance. Yayoi Kusama (1929) is a Japanese artist and writer. Throughout her career she has worked in a wide variety of media, including painting, collage, sculpture, performance art and environmental installations, most of which exhibit her thematic interest in psychedelic colors, repetition and pattern.

  • A Nepali lady sits on corrugated iron alongside a giant satellite dish on the roof of her home' in a suburb of Kathmandu, Nepal. We see the sunny street below in the background and other rooftops of scattered aerials, roughly-made brick walls. She has hung her colourful (colorful) clothes washing out to dry on a line and on the structure's bowl-like shape that points towards space and signals from the outside world. It was designed to receive television signals from Nepal's main TV station is Nepal Television (NTV) whose programmes are mostly serials from Pakistan and Hindi films. Nepalis however, search the wider-world for their news digest and western culture, especially during governmental crackdown and censorship during the democracy protest disturbances of 2006. King Gyanendra imposed severe media restrictions after assuming direct control of the country the previous year. The scene is of new technology in the backdrop of a poor, third world country who freedoms of expression and experience of western democracy has been tested in recent years.

  • Standing against strong Autumnal afternoon light, two police officers from an unknown constabulary, guard one entrance to the venue where the Conservative (Tory) Party Conference is being held, at the Bournemouth International Centre that overlooks the sea in Dorset, England. In 1990, the terrorist threat came from Irish Republicans (IRA) rather than Islamist extemists and credible threats proved to be correct, that these idealists wanted to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Police cordons were therefore an efficient method of controlling and restricting access to those without the proper delegates' or media accreditation. The most striking figure is the male officer in the foreground whose profile is prominent because of his traditional police helmet.

  • The landscape of fields and farming land including La Haye Sainte farm, the location of the Battle of Waterloo, on 25th March 2017, at Waterloo, Belgium. La Haye Sainte has changed very little since it played a crucial part in the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815.<br />
It was defended by about 400 British and German troops, hopelessly outnumbered by attacking French but held out until the late afternoon when they retired because their ammunition had run out. If Napoleon Bonapartes army had captured La Haye Sainte earlier in the day, almost certainly he would have broken through the allied centre and defeated the Duke of Wellingtons army. The Battle of Waterloo was fought on 18 June 1815. A French army under Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated by two of the armies of the Seventh Coalition: an Anglo-led Allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington, and a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, resulting in 41,000 casualties.

  • "Puddle in Oxleas Wood." A six month-old infant looks out from a baby back carrier frame whilst out on a muddy winter jaunt in Oxleas Wood on Shooters Hill, South London. The girl peers out with a fascination for the outdoors from a warm coat wearing a tiny hat and loose-fitting gloves to view the world while perched high-up on her mother's back who carries her child on the chilly walk. The bare trees and forested landscape can be imagined from the waterlogged puddle that is out of focus to the right. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • Young men high up on the hill look out over the city from the Acropolis of Athens. The main buildings on the Acropolis were built by Pericles in the fifth century BC as a monument to the cultural and political achievements of the inhabitants of Athens. The term acropolis means upper city and many of the city states of ancient Greece are built around an acropolis where the inhabitants can go as a place of refuge in times of invasion. It's for this reason that the most sacred buildings are usually on the acropolis. It's the safest most secure place in town. As little as 150 years ago there were still dwellings on the Acropolis of Athens. Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. It dominates the Attica periphery and is one of the world's oldest cities, as its recorded history spans around 3,400 years. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy.

  • Daphene Louis, an accountant and her boyfriend Steve Babtiste who works in customer care at Digicel at the Catrine -Flon Camp, Puit-Blain St, Delmar 75, Port Au Prince. "It was twenty-four hours after the quake before I saw my boyfriend. There were no communication networks and I had no way of knowing if he was dead or alive. When I saw him, I was so relieved I just jumped on him! Now we live in this camp under sheets held up with timber. It is very hard to get shelter from the sun,and when the rains come there will be no protection at all. We need proper tents but even one month on we have been unable to get help. We have no privacy here, it's always noisy. We don't even have chance for a cuddle. It would be great to get a proper mattress, but we don't even have rice so that's not high up in our priorities."

The identifying names of the Boeing type range such as 777s, 767, 747 and 757s are also stencilled on the apron concrete to allow exact distances for expandable air bridges and other airfield vehicles to connect and service these differing-sized commercial airliners. • Using a tabloid newspaper, a father seeks shelter from sunshine while sitting in a council deck chair. On the front page of the paper is a headline saying "Butchered' showing a picture of an unfortunate young 3 year-old boy murdered by a maniac axeman. Close-by is the man's own son who is digging a hole furiously in the sand. He looks uncannily like a slightly older version of the murdered boy. This coincidence is heightened because of the body-language of the digging lad, seemingly about to chop an unseen object with his red spade. Both man and boy are on holiday at the northern English seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire and they are otherwise having a great time on South Beach, near the Grand Hotel building, high up on the cliff.

  • Netting protects statues from birds on the roof of Gibson Hall in the capital's Bishopgate Street in the heart of the capital's financial district. Protecting the artworks from local wildlife high up overlooking the bust streets of the capital's oldest area, the netting has been carefully placed across the bodies of classical figures. Gibson Hall (1864 - 5), by John Gibson is a fine example of Victorian, neo-classical banking architecture designed as the HQ of a bank that replaced an earlier neo-Palladian mansion.

Helping her husband to light his cigarette in a breeze, the woman's coat is blowing in the wind, so high up in the mountains have they stopped during a daytrip to the north Welsh hills. Rolling misty mountains are in the distance as bad weather appears to be approaching. It was taken on a film camera by the man's father, an amateur photographer in 1973.
