Heat, water, limestone, and rock fracture combine to create the them. Travertine is deposited as white rock. The Mammoth Hot springs are constantly changing. As formations grow, water is forced to flow in different directions. The constant changes in water and mineral deposits create a living sculpture. Mammoth Hot Springs is divided into two sections, the lower terraces, and the Upper terrace Loop

  • A hot air balloon is partially inflated before flight at Longleat Estate, Warminster, England. Using firstly cold air from a gas-powered fan, before its propane burners are used for final inflation, one of the ground crew assists in the process by pulling at the fragile synthetic material so that the volume within the whole 'envelope' can fill without damage and it's spectrum arc of colours are becoming rainbow-like. The hot air balloon is the oldest successful human-carrying flight technology. The first manned flight was made by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes in a balloon created by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783. In today's sport balloons the envelope is generally made from nylon fabric and the mouth of the balloon (closest to the burner flame) is made from fire resistant material such as Nomex.

  • Hot gondolier wipes his brow during a heatwave, to the amusement of tourists, in Venice, Italy. The first mention ever of an Italian gondola was in Venice in 1094 and, of course, there have been gondoliers as long as there have been gondolas - so it’s one of the oldest professions in the world. Until August 2010, there had never been a single woman gondolier in Venice as licences were always passed down to male family members. Current prices (2015) is 80 Euros for a 40-minute journey (earning them approx 130,000 Euros a year) along the waterways of this old city but rarely do gondoliers wear their straw hat.

The unconscious child is a few months old and the parent stands expertly holding both hot liquid and infant as if juggling pleasure and parenthood simultaneously. The sleeping child is limp in the father's arm and is dressed in the same scarlet red as the vibrant colour on the wall behind. We only see the man's upper-legs and torso but the baby is tiny against his body making the scale of both young and old. otherwise, the generic room is bare of decoration or possessions - only a drying cloth and chopping board is seen on the draining board, near plain white tiles.

These are 'line' engineers from the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, and are resting while their precious aircraft are up in the air during training in Cyprus. It is hot for these north Europeans and they use the shade of one spare jet on the ground before again, jumping back to work when the jets return. The men are members of the team's support ground crew (called the Blues because of their distinctive blue overalls worn at summer air shows). The team's support ground crew who outnumber the pilots 8:1 and without them, the Red Arrows couldn't fly. Eleven trades are imported from some sixty that the RAF employs and teaches.
