  • The holy icon, the Megalokhari, is carried through the streets over the heads of pilgrims. The complex is built around a miraculous icon which according to tradition was found after the Virgin appeared to the nun St. Pelagia and revealed to her the place where the icon was buried. The icon is widely believed to be the source of numerous miracles. The icon was found on the very first days after the creation of the modern Greek State, henceforth Our Lady of Tinos was declared the patron saint of the Greek nation. The church is officially dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The major feast of the church, however, is on 15 August when the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) is commemorated by the Greek Orthodox Church

  • Before they were all replaced as working modes of public transport, a conductor is seen while travelling along a London road, as part of a two-man crew of a number 11 red London bus, England UK. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage and tourist routes. From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon. The conductor is the last human link with friendly public travel in London. He is usually a friendly face to accompany unsure travellers, often helping them reach their stop and answering questions about the journey with good humour and kindness. Their removal in favour of single driver crews meant that bus travel became more intimidating.

  • A red London bus is passing between sunlight and shadow as passengers sit patiently in heavy traffic on Piccadilly in Central London. At the back of the vehicle, a man is leaping on to the back to board via the entrance and exit, a characteristic of these old, classic modes of London transport. These buses are being fazed out in favour of more modern, cleaner fuel-burning vehicles where passengers can mount and dismount safer as many passengers injured themselves. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage and tourist routes. From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon.

  • A male passenger is asleep with his mouth open, leaning his head on a bus window as it passes the background pillars of the Bank of England in the financial district City of London. On the exterior of the bus are the words: "We've got to get this city to work," an advertising slogan used by London Transport to seduce commuters from their cars and back on to public transport which is one of the most expensive world capitals on which to travel by bus, train or underground. This style of bus is a traditional design called a 'Routemaster' which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage routes such as these destination: Victoria, Bond Street, Oxford Street, Holborn and Bank (the Bank of England). From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • Looking upwards towards the back of a number 8 red London bus which passes the pillars of the famous Bank of England building at Cornhill in the City Of London, the financial district, otherwise known as the Square Mile. We see the Bank rising as an imposing classical structure. Its columns are converging because of wide-angle lens-distortion, giving us the image of strength, stability and influence in UK economics. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage routes. Its distinctive rounded rear bodywork is easily recognisable as that classic British icon.

  • A Christian crucifix stands encased in a wooden box that has been attached to a panelled wall in Quebec, Canada. The image is white except for the Jesus icon itself and coloured lights which glow on this dark afternoon in the depths of Winter. The religious shrine consists of the human effigy standing a plinth next to faded dried flowers. On the left side are six wheel hubs also fixed to a wire fence that borders this person's property. Their decorative design suggests the Canadian owner likes driving sports or utility vehicles but who is also a worshipper of the Christian faith and believer in idols. Canada's 2001 Census showed, 72% of the Canadian population listed Roman Catholicism or Protestantism as their religion. The Roman Catholic Church in Canada is by far the country's largest single denomination.

The effigies of Jesus are two different sizes, a larger and a smaller and are painted in realistic wood and skin colours with red streaks that symbolise blood emerging from the Holy man's hands, chest, knees and feet where the Roman nails were supposed to have pierced. Other models are seen below the crosses - models of animal garden ornaments and mantelpiece furniture.

  • Resistance: The best Olympic Spirit. With John Carlos, Doreen Lawrence, Janet Alder and others. John Carlos signs books to a very happy crowd of fellow political activists. John Carlos is the one on the far right on the poster behing him, the iconic picture from Mexico. John Carlos won Bronze in the 200 Olympics final in 1968 in Mexico. He and his fellow black American runner, Tommie Smith who won Gold, raised their black gloved fists, wearing no shoes, on the podium to highlight the plight of black Americans. Both lost their medals and were expelled from the American Olympic team and sent home where they faced years of death threats and struggling to keep their careers going. The image of the two men became an iconic symbol of standing up against oppression not just for black Americans but worldwide.
