  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • A Christmas tree glows in a warm window of a rural house seen from outside in bleak temperatures during mid-winter snows in England. In deep blue light we experience from the feel of this picture, the rawness of deep winter, the icy conditions where an unseen country-living family are safe indoors. The property is a cottage on a quiet road in the Mendip hills, southeast of the city of Bristol in western England. It is during the Christmas holiday period and families, who are lucky to have reached their homes during very difficult weather, are now enjoying the solitude and tranquillity of a peaceful life - away from the metropolis. Their brick wall is topped with snow and the light from the burglar alarm shows the security system is active. We also see the bleak landscape of bare trees and the remote icy road.

  • A person crosses an icy minor road in the south London borough of Herne Hill, Lambeth during the bad weather covering every part of the UK and known as the Beast from the East because Siberian winds and very low temperatures have blown across western Europe from Russia, on 1st March 2018, in Lambeth, London, England.

  • A 12 year-old boy walks along a frozen rural road with his pet dog following alongside during wintry conditions in North Somerset. The viewer also follows on as the lad walks towards his home on a hill, set near the bare mid-winter trees during a particularly nasty period of the Christmas holiday period. The boy's house is in the distance with wood smoke curling from two chimneys. The smoke wafts across the remote road in the Mendip Hills, recently cleared of snow but still deceptively icy. The low sun is slightly obscured by bare branches and offers little warmth to this bleak landscape.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

  • A car owner attempts to shovel his way out of snow on a hill in South London. Bending down to remove the fallen snow from the road, he will again try to get a grip and friction of the slippery surface in order to make it up the gradient in Herne Hill. A van behind is already becoming impatient and is about to get past the stranded car and a passer-by looks on from the pavement, bemused. As the capital's infrastructure ground to a halt, with few trains and no buses for commuters to catch, walking and driving remained the only options.

  • A boy plays snowballs at night during heavy snow showers in central London - a rare event for an inner-city. Snowflakes are falling in large amounts settling on this street in Herne Hill, South London. The lad is in his element by going outdoors at night as the showers are falling everywhere about him. He hides behind a parked car at the kerbside, crouching low to avoid detection by his elder sister. Relishing the hide and seek game they're playing and the prospect of landing the snow as a direct hit makes him look mischievous and excited.

  • High in the Himalayan foothills, dawn arrives on a bitterly cold morning at Poon Hill. Trekkers have gathered at this spot to take in the wonder of this spectacular landscape of snow-capped peaks in the distance. A sherpa has written his name in ice on a rail and western travellers continue their journey higher into the Annapurna range to sample the inner-peace to be discovered here in one of the most dramatic locations on the planet. Villages partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing and also on the passing tourist trade. • A traditional red telephone box is seen on Denmark Hill, South London covered in fresh snow from overnight snowfall. Pedestrians walk past next to Ruskin Park, SE24. These K-series kiosks were designed in 1936 by the renowned designer Giles Gilbert Scott. With the increasing use of mobile phones the static phone boxes are still used in remote areas of the UK where mobile service is still patchy and in major towns and cities, their presence is becoming rarer. In rural regions however, the British red phone box is still a delight to see and use.

In addition to the lack of buses, trains were severely affected and roads like this have not been gritted by the local borough council, leaving motorists struggling to control their vehicles is the slippery conditions. The taxi's orange light is still illuminated indicating he is free for hire and a foot of snow is piled on his roof as the headlights pick out the driving blizzard conditions. • The field of stelae of the outdoor Holocaust Memorial, a reminder of Jewish persecution and anti-Semitism in Europe during the second world war. U.S. architect Peter Eisenman's controversial design was chosen as a fitting tribute to the Jews that died before and during World War II as part of Hitler's plan to exterminate them. Eisenman's design is quite unique and has drawn both praise and criticism. Occupying about 205,000 square feet (19,000 square meters) of space near the Brandenburg Gate and just a short distance from where the ruins of Hitler's bunker is buried, the Berlin Holocaust Memorial is made up of 2,711 gray stone slabs that bear no markings, such as names or dates. It is estimated that the Nazis used these camps to kill an estimated 11 million people.

  • Dragging a baby's buggy as family members go out for a walk on open snowbound countryside in North Somerset. It is Boxing Day, the day after Christmas and the traditional family walk is more of an event this year with much of Britain covered in heavy snows during a particularly nasty period of climactic freezing conditions. Rather than push, a father pulls his child's buggy through the snow accompanied by another man and a younger boy all of whose legs are in the same walking positions. The female members of the group are out of this picture and in the way that walks often play out, females and males speak with their own gender. The landscape is that of a rural hill with a grey sky filled with more snow cloud and bare wintry trees are behind, their branches bare.

  • Lisa Kennedy, farm assistant, from Middlewich in Cheshire, 'I was always interested in animals and farms from being small, and began showing pigs for people more than 10 years ago. I bought some of my own Tamworths for my 30th birthday in 2007, and keep them on a friend's property. Tamworths are renowned for being the big characters of the pig world and I felt a personal affinity with the breed. They are very quick-witted and very good at escaping - remember the Tamworth Two? You have to keep a very close eye on them, because once one goes, they all go. .The Great Yorkshire Show, one of Britain's biggest agricultural shows, is famous for its competitive displays of livestock. • A father chases a runaway tyre (tire) along the wet sand before it crashes into the man's young child, otherwise unaware of the impending impact. Chasing the object is the priority on this winter day at Whitley Bay, a North-Eastern English seaside town. The beach is dark and it has been raining but father and child are enjoying the freedom and common bond during this outdoor game. Waves of the icy North Sea crash onto the seafront and the child is preoccupied with the force of nature and the exhilaration of being outside in the cold.

  • Sitting among others in long grass a middle-class lady reads the high-circulation Daily Mail newspaper during a lunchtime break at the Chelsea Flower Show, in London England. The front page headline reads 'Icy Blast from the Kremlin' in an echo from the darkest days of the Cold War, when western media fuelled the insatiable appetite for propaganda. But this scene is from May 1989 before the fall of the Berlin Wall and when the eastern states of the Warsaw Pact were still ruled by their Communist masters. Visitors to this annual horticultural event either sit in the cool shade or like this woman who appears comfortable cross-legged in sandals and a summer dress, stays under the hot mid-day sun with her tabloid format paper spread and with her possessions kept in a shoulder bag.

  • A young lad enjoys the delights of freshly-fallen snow, in a south London street. With a cheeky grin on his icy cheeks and frosty snow on his bobble hat and coat, the kid has been enjoying a snowball fight with friends who can be seen behind with more snballs in their gloved hands. There is unsalted snow in the road too and this is an opportunity to spend otherwise limited time outdoors when children are increasingly indoors on computer-based activities.
