  • Alongside the A5 highway, an industrial landscape is illuminated in light from roadside street-lighting. Reeds are in the foreground in front of a giant generic warehouse that glows from its own territory. Grass is next to the crash-barrier and faint mist is seen on this cold winter night at the DIRFT warehouse logistics park in Daventry, Northamptonshire England. This 365 acre site off Junction 18 of the M1 motorway is a hub for road, rail and service infrastructure, some 2.3m sq.ft. of distribution and manufacturing floorspace had been constructed by 2004 and occupiers including Tesco’s, Tibbett & Britten plc, Ingram Micro, Royal Mail, the W.H. Malcolm Group, Eddie Stobart Ltd, Wincanton and Exel, have been attracted to this unique logistics location.

  • An inconguous landscape of modern industrial architecture and a foreground of a patchy, poorly-made service road at Northfleet, near Gravesend, Kent England. This is Kimberly Clark's Northfleet Mill which manufactures paper-based products for the hygiene and health market such as tissues and nappies (diapers). The word concrete has been sprayed by aerosol on the ground along with a locating X that marks a confusing and ironic spot for concrete to be found. The high-sided blue walls of the mill factory are smooth and unlike the rough road and to the right the sky is overcast while on the right, it is blue. Kimberly-Clark is a leading global health and hygiene company employing more than 55,000 people worldwide and posting sales of $16.7 billion.

  • Next to a beach bather, water pours from an outlet pipe on a tourist beach on Coloane island Cheoc Van beach, Macau, China. With his face towards the course sand, the bather lies with his head towards a large wall, whose large stone blocks accommodate the pipe at the bottom. Apart from a pair of brief swimming trunks and a sun hat, he lies with ankles crossed, as if in paradise. But this seemingly industrial landscape is far from the idyllic place other tourists might wish to frequent. We do not know how filthy or indeed how pure, this water that pours out from the ground is, but the suspicion is that the pollution may affect human health. The once-Portuguese colony of Macau is now administered by China as a Special Economic Region (SER) and the official languages are Portuguese and Chinese.

  • A bricked-up doorway and windows with football graffiti in a vacant retail building during recession in the city of Newport, Wales. This early 20th century building is now vacant and close to becoming derelict. The boarding up of its access points help to make it secure from illegal entry. The more recent addition of plastic plumbing, with outlets and downpipes help make this an incongruous industrial landscape of inner-city recession and employment hardship.

Britains second city has been in a state of redevelopment for some years now, but with many outdated architectural remnants still remaining, on a grey day, the urban landscape appears as if frozen in time. Coronavirus or Covid-19 is a new respiratory illness that has not previously been seen in humans. While much or Europe has been placed into lockdown, the UK government has put in place more stringent rules as part of their long term strategy, and in particular social distancing.

  • It is 10.15 in the morning and a mother and her daughter have crossed a road in Ruda Slaska, Poland, while an older lady has paused on the zebra crossing. It is a dark and gloomy day in this heavily polluted, industrial town in southern Poland. The local employer is the Huta Pokoj SA steel mill that dominates the landscape, rising as a filthy tower that makes the air quality so poor that respiratory deceases are common, with soot present in the atmosphere for children to breathe. The environmental impact of 1990s post-Stalinist Polish heavy industry is evident. The day is damp, depressing and unhealthy with a truck's headlights on as pedestrians stand on the roadside, wait at the bus stop or cycle past on the pavement.

  • As an early sun rises, the twin stacks of Richborough cooling Towers make silhouettes against the golden morning light. Now decommissioned, these industrial giants of the landscape are sending clouds of steam vapour into the air, in the county of Kent. Nature can be seen competing with 20th Century technology as solar energy is seen against the war power being generated. From 1962-1971 Richborough burned coal from collieries. In 1971 the station was converted to burn oil. Too costly to run plant underwent trials on an experimental fuel called Orimulsion, a cheap heavy oil and water-based emulsion produced form natural bitumen from Venezuela. Initial results or trials suggested it would make a cheap clean fuel alternative to oil but high sulphur emissions from the plant caused nearby Acid Rain and after local protest, the site has since been derelict.

The promise of more space for visitors is proclaimed by gallery owners whose new wing will allow more comfort for those appreciating the Arts. • A landscape of facilities and equipment outside the curved wooden roof of the iconic Velodrome during the London 2012 Olympics. The final bill for the 2012 Olympics could be ten times higher than the original estimate, according to an investigation. The predicted cost of the games when London won the bid in 2005 was £2.37billion. That figure has now spiralled to more than £12billion and could reach as much as £24billion, the Sky Sports investigation claims. The Olympics public sector funding package, which covers the building of the venues, security and policing, was upped to around £9.3bn in 2007. This land was transformed to become a 2.5 Sq Km sporting complex, once industrial businesses and now the venue of eight venues including the main arena, Aquatics Centre and Velodrome plus the athletes' Olympic Village.

  • Overview of New Lanark, the Scottish industrial revolution community village managed by social pioneer Robert Owen. New Lanark is on the River Clyde, approximately 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometres) from Lanark, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It was founded in 1786 by David Dale, who built cotton mills and housing for the mill workers. Dale built the mills there to take advantage of the water power provided by the river. Under the ownership of a partnership that included Dale's son-in-law, Robert Owen, a Welsh philanthropist and social reformer, New Lanark became a successful business and an epitome of utopian socialism. The New Lanark mills operated until 1968 and is now one of five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Scotland.

  • A street corner where temporary construction fencing and disruption has blocked off a City of London street. Blue netting in thius industrial fence is similar to the blue skies above the building as it will look in the future. The narrow part of a street called Wallbrook (the route of the ancient River Wallbrook that still flows underground here) is made even narrower due to the disruption in the part of the capital known as the Square Mile, London's financial and oldest heart.

  • Seen from St Catherine's Church in the old city of Gdansk, Poland, the famously sprawling shipyard is seen from across the city's old housing and trees. Once known as the Lenin Shipyard but still the largest of its kind in modern Poland. Here in 1980 the union Solidarity (Solidarnosc) was conceived and was partly responsible for a growing dissent against Communist rule, ultimately contributing towards the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lech Walesa started his political career as an electrical technician here, going on to lead Solidarity and then to become President of a democratic Poland. Today Gdansk is a major industrial city and shipping port.
