Lawyer and justice advocate Bryan Stevenson set up the Equal Justice Initiative in 1995, using his MacArthur grant money to support it and guarantee a defence of anyone in Alabama sentenced to the death penalty. Alabama was the only state at the time that did not provide legal assistance to people on death row.
