  • Interlocked arms and hands as a family portrait is recorded after a civil wedding ceremony in Essex, England. The family members include the bride herself, the groom, the bride's mother and her husband - the bride's father all stand with their backs to the viewer and stand in a close relationship of affection and bond. This European wedding has taken place inside a covered Orangery at a private wedding and event venue. Rather than marrying in a religious context, the happy couple have preferred to tie the knot in this popular setting for a non-church meaning.

  • Ninety year-old Mrs Irene Spurling sits with fingers crossed looking to camera with a mild look of mild bemusement. She is actually familiar with celebrity, having been the secretary to the Australian operatic singer Dame Nellie Melba between 1919-1921. She travelled with the diva in the latter years of her singing career, and in 1993 lived in a nursing home in Winchester, Hampshire England. Irene has clear blue eyes, brushed silver hair and seemingly gnarled, arthritic hands and still wears her wedding ring. Despite her years, she is still active and interested in her surroundings.

  • A couple stand arm in arm with a young mother pushing her child's buggy past a grey construction hoarding in central London's Trafalgar Square. Interlinked with fingers similarly together, the man and woman (husband and wife) look in opposite directions, perhaps overwhelmed by the busy square in the heart of the capital. A lamp post's has created a strong linear theme to the pavement and background hoarding that screens other work.

  • A 1992 portrait of a British Rail employee stands at the gate of a platform at Victoria station. Wearing the old uniform of that rail company. British Railways (BR), which from 1965 traded as British Rail, was the operator of most of the rail transport in Great Britain between 1948 and 1997. It was formed from the nationalisation of the "Big Four" British railway companies and lasted until the gradual privatisation of British Rail, in stages between 1994 and 1997. The British Rail "double arrow" logo is formed of two interlocked arrows showing the direction of travel on a double track railway and was nicknamed "the arrow of indecision". It is now employed as a generic symbol on street signs in Great Britain denoting railway stations.

  • A stone wall detail at the Old Smithy, Pennyghael, Isle of Mull, Scotland. In a close-up view, we see the tight fitting stones interlocked to provide strength as well as security for this domestic property. Their are few weeds telling us the wall is well-maintained and it is likely that only local materials have been used in this and other buildings. The origins of building in dry stone, i.e. without the use of mortar, are lost in the mists of antiquity. The use of stone in various builds such as funeral chambers and living accommodation date from the Stone and Iron Ages. Regional styles and patterns of construction do vary throughout the country but the principles of construction established thousands of years ago are still practiced to this day. Regrettably, there is little written historical record of those who practiced the craft in the early days.

  • A rather obese woman stands in the waves at the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. With hands behind her back and fingers interlocked the lady wears a turquoise bathing costume that just about fits her ample, wide body. Her bottom is large as are her legs that have cellulite on the tops of her thighs. She looks left alone, a solitary person standing with her back to the viewer - or perhaps she is standing guard, keeping watch on children as they play safely in the sea. Water splashes against her lower legs and is frozen still by a fast shutter speed. It is a fine, bright sunny afternoon on this Eastern coast of England, more noted for very changeable weather rather than the heatwave experienced here.

  • Long boarder youth sleeps between downhill contests in Tregaron, Wales. During the lunchtime rest of races, on the top of a hillside of slate rock in this quiet mid-Wales hilltop. The young man with beard has pulled down the hood over his face to shield his eyes and so to aid his brief sleep. With fingers interlocked and on a softer patch at the side of the road/track, the man enjoys a moment of peace and tranquility.

  • Traditional dry stone wall in Powys, Wales, UK. Dry stone is a building method by which structures are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. Dry stone technology is best known in the context of wall construction, but dry stone artwork, buildings, bridges, and other structures also exist.

  • Permit to Work and No Entry notices in construction barriers, in a south London street. Looking down at this detail view of the street barriers, ordinarily designed for roadworks and pedestrian health and safety barriers, we see the temporary paper attached to the interlocking plastic items warning us pedestrians of entering a restricted area. It is of course pointless and indicative of bylaws and safety concerns gone mad. They have apparently been stacked until needed for further use during roadworks for London's cycling superhighway.
