  • Dr Safaa Elagib Adam reads documents on the journey by air to the firstever international Conference on Womens' Challenge in Darfur. Seated in a chartered Russian Antonov aircraft during flight to Al Fasher (also spelled, Al-Fashir) where women from remote parts of Sudan gathered to discuss peace and political issues. The short flight saves her a hazardous five-day drive by road, known for extreme acts of violence by rebels and Janjaweed soldiers. The Sudanese Women General Union has 27,000 branches all over Sudan, including Darfur. They have representatives in all rural villages, across communities of around 80 tribes and clans. • Displayed in the window of a traditional Chinese medicine shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, are the labels and plastic bags containing some of the 500 Chinese herbs that are in use today in Eastern herbal remedies, of which 250 or so are very commonly used in the treatment of ailments and diseases. Rather than being prescribed individually, single herbs are combined into formulas designed to adapt to specific needs of individual patients. Herbal formulas contain from 3 to 25 herbs or animal parts, some sourced from endangered species. As with diet therapy, each herb has one or more of the five flavours/functions and one of five "temperatures" ("Qi") (hot, warm, neutral, cool, cold). After the herbalist determines the energetic temperature and functional state of the patient's body, they prescribe a mixture of herbs tailored to balance disharmony.

  • In the darkness of a taxiway at the southern end of Heathrow Airport, the bright lights of an engineering hangar spill out into the night. A Boeing 747 Jumbo jet sits nose-in behind another during a scheduled set of maintenance tasks that every aircraft needs to keep to in order for its continued airworthiness. The unmistakable shape of this large aircraft is a half-silhouette against the intensity of the hangar and blue flare spots that arise from the internal glass in the camera's lens. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • An odd job maintenance man bends awkwardly on a pair of stepladders to reach an internal light fitting in the cafeteria area of auditing company Ernst & Young's Norman Foster-designed 385,000 square foot European headquarters at More London, England. Dressed in blue shirt and dark trousers and with keys attached to his belt, the balancing man stretches into the hole left by the light to access wiring. To his right we also see an idyllic scene of wild meadow flowers, a carpet of red flora that goes into the distance though incongrously, the reflection of many cafe lights are seen in the sky of the meadow picture. Ernst & Young employs 114,000 people, in 700 locations across 140 countries around the world.

  • A young girl volunteer is caked in mud after an activity on a Raleigh International expedition in the rainforests of Brunei, Borneo. Beaming from ear to ear, the lady relishes her time here in one of the remotest and most dangerous habitats on the planet. It will have been a life-changing experience for her and her newfound friends from all over the world who will have had to raise several thousands of sponsored Pounds for the privilege of spending two months away from a dull, comfortable life at home, rather than building community projects like bridges or schools. Raleigh International is a charity that provides adventurous and challenging expeditions for people from all backgrounds, nationalities and ages, especially young people. Over the last 23 years, 30,000 people have been involved in more than 250 expeditions to over 40 countries.

  • Outside the offices of The Sun newspaper on Pennington Street, London, England, UK. This is home to News International who have been embroiled at the centre of the phone hacking scandal and to all of the newpapers in the UK owned by Rupert Murdoch. British police arrested five senior members of staff at News Corporation's newspaper The Sun, as part of investigations into alleged payments to police by journalists for information. This story continues the controversy surrounding News International with regards to the phone hacking scandal. Trevor Kavanagh, the newspapers's associate editor said the senior members of staff had been treated like "an organised gang" and the tabloid was "not a swamp that needed draining". He said money sometimes changed hands while unearthing stories, and this had always been standard practice. The Met Police declined to comment.
